Should the Nintendo Switch get a price cut?

True, it wouldn’t impact income much, if you don’t consider tens of millions much, BUT:

1. Price cuts can help boost sales if done at proper times
2. The number of price cuts that can be done on a console are limited - a console can only drop so far in price.
3. In 2018 a 300€ Switch is not much less compelling than a 250 or 200€ Switch.
4. In 2019 or 2020, a price cut plus Pokemon bundle, or some kind of new party game, would boost sales MUCH more than they would chopping the price today - ultimately gaining Nintendo a lot more.

A temporary sale in November this year would probably do a lot more than a permanent price cut at this point.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

Nintendo doesn't really cut the price willy-nilly like the other two consoles Nintendo tends to only cut the price when sales are below their expectations. That's why the Wii got a price cut in 2009 and why the 3DS got a price cut in 2011.

Also, Nintendo cutting the price because the PS4 is beating them is a stupid move. The Switch is not competing with the PS4. It is competing with the PS5. It would be like if Nintendo cut the Wii's price after being outsold by the PS2 a couple of times.

Switch is 9th generation. Everyone else is playing on last gen systems! UPDATE: This is no longer true

Regardless PS4 sales, Switch is selling great in any case, there is no need for price cut currently.

Right now, the Switch is up YoY and is looking like it will continue to build on its lead after the 2017 Launch Period has worn off. So, barring something like an Xbox One reveal/PS3 launch price PR disaster, the chances of weekly Switch sales dropping like a rock and falling below 2017, as low as they were during May, June, and July up until Splatoon 2 launched, is highly unlikely. So if it's going to be up YoY by a comfortable margin, why bother cutting the price?

They're going to keep the price locked at $300 for as long as they possibly can until hardware sales begin to noticeably tank, and with the lineup they have so far for 2018 + games they have yet to show that we know are coming (Animal Crossing, Fire Emblem, Metroid Prime 4, POKEMON, etc.) I think the hardware sales drop will come later rather than sooner.

It should have been cheaper at launch, but it won't get a price cut. For two reasons:

1-it sells well, so why sell it cheaper if you can make more money.
2-for Nintendo a price cut is admitting that they fail at something and cutting the price will fix the problem, Nintendo really doesn't like to admit that there is a problem (but in that case, I don't think there is that much of a problem)

The best case scenario here is that when Sony cuts the price of the PS4/Pro, Nintendo reacts and says "we want to stay competitive".

I think it should have been $199.99 from the get-go.

Way too early... it's selling fine right now where it's at anyways. I feel like if they would do a price cut they would have stock issues again.

Sales are fine. No need for a price cut.

In my opinion the N64 was not just the best console of the 5th gen but, to this day the best console ever created!

I think that, because for the past few weeks it's been just behind the PS4 in hardware sales, the Nintendo Switch needs a price cut, unless it's too soon to take such measures.

Who here thinks it should get a price cut, and who here thinks it doesn't need one?

Nintendo is not a company that bases their decisions based on internet forum banter. That's not to say that they don't want to be on the top, they do, but it's clear where the inspiration for this thread came from. Do you think Nintendo didn't know they'd have a mediocre first half of the year, when they have Smash Brothers, Fire Emblem, Yoshi and probably Animal Crossing in the 2nd half of the year? It doesn't really matter what it gets NOW because it's getting pretty steady figures in proportion to how little there is.

Besides, I don't see the point in caring that much. The Switch doesn't even have it's handheld developers releasing a game yet, and it's been a year since it's release. The handheld devs are responsible for some of Nintendo's biggest franchises. Once Nintendo runs dry with franchises to sell, then let's talk about price cuts. Right now, it's more or less tracking to where PS4 is at (which is saying a lot, given it still sold more than PS4 in it's first year).

Maybe once their online service starts generating revenue, they'll be in a position to have smaller margins on hardware like Sony and Microsoft.
