Dragon Quest XI coming September 4th to PS4 and Steam - Switch 'much later', no 3DS version

Forums - Gaming Discussion - Dragon Quest XI coming September 4th to PS4 and Steam - Switch 'much later', no 3DS version

Finally, a release date! This'll be one of my few day one buys of the year.

Nice, that's my birthday so I already have the week off work, looking forward to it.

It’s like Nintendo has to do everything just to get any Nintendo version of Dragon Quest to the West. It even happened to DQIX, on the DS. I don’t know what’s the deal with SE when it comes to Nintendo versions of their games. I’ll most likely wait for the Switch version but I really don’t like how it feels that Nintendo has to continuously bend over just to get these big Japanese games localized for their systems.

Lol, why'd Square talk about a Switch version in 2016 if they knew it was going to take more time to release. It'll be late 2019 or early 2020 by the looks of it. Going with the Steam version then. And no 3DS version? Square just wants Nintendo to publish it for them as usual, man they're cheap.

That's pretty normal for Square Enix, they often make announcements years in advance, just look at FFVIIR or FFXV/VersusXIII, Kingdom Hearts 3 for some of the more extreme cases. I really wish they'd hold off on such early announcements. It's only when the game is actually nearly done and they have something real to show off that I get excited.

This sucks, I was going to buy the 3DS version. I got so used to playing so many RPGs on DS, PSP, Vita and 3DS and now Switch. I love being able to mindlessly grind while watching TV or a movie or something.

I guess I'll wait and see if the Switch version ever gets released, who knows? Maybe I'll get the PS4 version used at a later point... man fuck Square Enix! This company has sucked for years. Can we have Squaresoft back?

SE must be quite unhappy with the mess in which they are with DQXI Switch : the port has been taking time, resources and money for some time already and seeing DQH/DQB sales on Switch, they can't expect very high return. No surprise to see them pushing PS4/PC.

DQH and DQB aren't good gauges for how a Dragon Quest game will sell on Switch. Those games didn't do too hot on PS4 either. Core RPGs in the series since DQ8 have done well overseas. If anything, Switch was DQ's best bet in the west combining the handheld and console nature of it, and considering the Switch lacks huge JRPGS. Xenoblade 2 was the first one and it sold very well. If they really wanted to push it in the west, they'd get a Switch version out sooner to take advantage of how little competition is on the platform regarding JRPGS. Meanwhile PS4 is going to get KHIII, has Ni No Kuni II, FFXV, Tales, etc.

Well, we still have Octopath Traveler coming this summer and Shin Megami Tensei V probably coming next year.

And I'm pretty that other mid/high profile JRPG will begin to come at the beginning of next year. Can't forget the Mario RPG series (Paper, Mario & Luigi) too !

And why the hell not get a Golden Sun after Camelot release of Mario Tennis Aces O^^O (Ok I might be dreaming ...)

If this is giving so much trouble I wonder how much FFXV could

Yeah Octopath is gonna be amazeballs. SMTV will probably be a 2020 title by the sounds of it.

I personally can't wait for the first fully 3D HD Mario and Luigi RPGS, that's going to be something I won't forget.

Golden sun...eh, I really hope it comes but I think Camelot has been wrapped up too much with Mario Sports games. A full HD Golden sun would easily rival DQXI imo.

Can't wait to play this one on my PS4 Pro. PS4 is the place to be for JRPG's these days.

I don't think I'm all that surprised. It may have been another case where the game was in development before the Switch announcement or when dev kits were readily available, as well as uncertainty of whether the system would be a success or not, which resulted in a Switch version taking more time to develop for. They may have wanted to focus on the readily available consoles to ensure the title sells well too. That's the way I see it, and I don't really fault them for that. As long as the game comes at a later date, I'm fine waiting. It's not like there's nothing to play until then xD

Kinda a bummer they aren't bringing the 3DS version though, since it sounds like some people would have wanted it. I suppose they see the 3DS as being irrelevant now since it's pretty much on its way out. I think if they did releasing it westside they would have found some success at least.
