Forums - General Discussion - Scary day with my diabetes type 2 Today

For low BS, get glucose paste or tabs. They’re portable. Keep them with you at all times.

But your sugar shouldn’t be dropping that low if it’s controlled and your diet is appropriate. First off, if you’re drinking anything other than water (e.g. soda), that’s gonna send your sugar through the roof. If you’re a type 2 diabetic, it’s highly likely your diet brought on your diabetes in the first place. And if you don’t change your diet now and get your diabetes under control, the hard truth is that you’re gonna take years off your life. My first recommendation would be for you to ask your doc to refer you to a dietitian. You need to learn how to eat right.

Something scary happen I woke up but saw light blindling dots in my vision but could still see my view my blood sugar was at the lowest ever today at 53 Im happy I checked my sugar i have diabetes type 2 . Strange that it was very low .

My body is accustomed to soda . I blame myself today for not taking enough sugar and my mom giving me my sugar pill that drops sugar alot ate another delicious slice of wheat bread with honey the normal sugar for person without diabetes is 110 my sugar if I eat way too much sugar can go to 160 both high and low blood sugar are bad

Two points...  160 is not high, as long as it doesn't stay there.  That is perfectly normal after 1 or even 2 hours after eating.  If it never falls below 160 than it's high....  (actually, if it never falls below 120 it's high...)

Don't think you mentioned what type of soda, but check the carbs on it...  generally soda is very bad for diabetes unless it's diet (0 carb).

If changing diet (such as less carbs), or increasing the amount of exercise you probably will need less medication and can possibly even get off of it, but you will want to talk to your doctor about it.

Huh if you have diabetes type 2 you should be avoiding softdrinks etc

^ Truth.

Type 2 diabetes is when your makeing about enough insoluin, but your body cant make use of it.
Usually it means your running around with too high a blood sugar levels (which can be really bad for you).

Tretment for type 2 is differnt than type 1.

Type 1 is usually eat as much sugar as you want, but meassure it and then take insulin via a injection matching the amounts of sugar you ate.

Type 2 is usually dont ever eat sugar, try to keep your sugar levels as close as possible to the norm value a body needs. Pills that take care off excess is normal.

GProgrammer is right, a type 2 diabetic shouldnt be drinking softdrinks on a daily basis.
But then again its his own life, if he doesnt want to take care off it thats his own issue.
Bad stuff can happpend to diabetics though, like haveing arms/legs amputated as a result, going blind, ect ect.

If I had it, Id probably swear off sugar as much as possible... and be forced to start low carb diets foods.
its a really sucky thing to have, imo its worse than type 1 diabetes.

"In a person without diabetes, blood sugars tend to stay between 70 and 100 mg/dL (3.8 and 5.5 mmol). After a meal, blood sugars can rise up to 120 mg/dL or 6.7 mmol. It will typically fall back into the normal range within two hours."

Usually you ll get a device that can meassure it in mmol.

And you ll  be told to keep your blood sugar around 4 to 7.

If type 1 : you ll get a long term working insolin, and a quick working one, and you ll have to jungle how much insolin to take vs your carb intake.

if type 2 : your out of luck, you have to "keep" it in normal range mostly via not eating carbs, and working out ect to keep it low. Those Pills dont really do much to regulate it if you have a bad case of type2 (ur body cant make use of insulin).  Healthy lifestyle is the only thing you can really do.

well this thread sounds intense. hope you are ok now.

Do you have a reference for normal only rise upto 120???  I have seen different published opinions (between 140 and 200, with 200 being max for 1 hour), but never one that it remains that low after eating a large amount of carbs.  A quick google search came up with  "For someone without diabetes, a fasting blood sugar on awakening should be under 100 mg/dl. Before-meal normal sugars are 70–99 mg/dl. “Postprandial” sugars taken two hours after meals should be less than 140 mg/dl" from https://www.diabetesselfmanagement.com/blog/what-is-a-normal-blood-sugar-level/

You can also get insulin for treatment of type 2. Doctors don't normally recommend it as the first treatment option for type 2, as it is generally easier to recommend a pill than a shot and does typically require closer (more frequent) monitoring.

I have to eat some form of sugar without sugar I will fall into a coma and die .
I dont drink much soda just once a day and its sprite berry mix

You have to keep your blood sugar levels in "normal" ranges.
This ofc means you cant let it drop down to low (like 1-2 range) and risk going into a diabetic coma.

But if you just think keeping it "high" is enough..... its not.
Its not healthy for your body to have periodic or prolonged blood sugar levels that are too high.
Theres a ton of Conditions related to diabetes caused by high blood sugar levels, that ruin you too.

People with diabetes that dont manage their blood sugar right, end up loseing arms/legs, haveing heart attacks, going blind ect ect ect.

Edit:
Nothing wrong with useing Spirte Berry to regulate your blood sugar levels if they drop to low.

I always have glucose tablets in my purse or nearby on a nightstand in case of these type of crashes. Regular testing and adjusting is important, especially for food that can throw numbers off to not over adjust either. If you can establish a dietary and exercise regiment with a doctor's guidance I'd suggest that along with testing before meals and before going to sleep.

I'm trying to lose weight so I can live longer I was first diagnosed of type 2 diabetes back in 2011 when i was 23 years old . my grandma is 81 years old and had diabetes since in her 50's She drinks alot of milk though but I dont drink much milk because it gives you kidney rocks if you drink too much if I drink milk its 1/4th of cereal bowl once a day and rice crispies cereal . the only sugar related drink I have the whole day is 1 soda I eat cheeseburger in morning eat nothing in lunch and at dinner eat any substitute food if i dont get second cheeseburger like two mini tacos i always drink water after the morning soda my doctor says my sugar level is 6 i think only nondiabetics are 5 or lesser I drink water the rest of the day no milk no soda again probably 1/8 of tiny glass of orange juice at night if I'm worried of my blood sugar dropping :( . blood sugar dropping is more dangerous than high blood sugar and when I check my blood sugar its always between 115 to 171 never over 200 and something unless I drank alot of soda that day I usually get more blood sugar in 110 to 150 something .

You eat fast food twice a day on avg? O_O

Maybe its just because im european but that seems.... like alot of fast food.
Id say something like pizza/burger is something I eat like once ever 2-3 months or so.
I do have a sweet tooth, and eat alot of snacks though (chips / cake and the like).

I have low chesterol too says my doctoc even though I eat twice the entire day and skip lunch though like 3 times a week I get a banana for lunch

No idea what my chesterol is at... its probably abit too high, I love meat.

My dad has Type 1 diabetes.
Its why I said I think its important to manage your blood sugar levels.

dx11332sega:

Anyways 53 mg/dl = 2.9 mmol/L

Here in denmark, we use the mmol/L way of meassureing.

When you start risking going into a coma is around ~2.2 mmol/L ( ~40 mg dl) apparently.
I can understand you where shocked at it being 53 even if its still far from dangerously low.

Dont you get any symptoms?
like my dad can "feel" when his blood sugar is getting to low (he ll get headached, nausea ect).

In a normal person (without diabetes) you should have a blood sugar level of ~4,4-4,6 mmol/L (80-82 mg dl).
~1 hours after eating a meal.
