Forums - Sales Discussion - How Nintendo can challenge Sony's dominance in Europe

I only have anecdotal evidence, but I think Nintendo will get there int he long run, if they don't screw up again. The reason I'm thinking this is because my son and all his friends at school like Nintendo better. Everytime they are around none of them cares about the PS4, they just play with the Switch or PC. Seriously, the only one playing on the Playstation here is me. The old guy who is over 30.

It kinda reminds me of the 90s when the PlayStation came out. Back then it was the opposite. Me and my friends only played with the Playstation, it was the hot shit and all. We had a N64 at home, but the only one playing on that console was my mother. Fast forward 20 years, kids have become adults and still play on their Playstation.

Like I said, it's of course anecdotal and all, but I just have this feeling that Nintendo is on the rise and Playstation just isn't as cool as it used to be among children and teenagers. At least here in Europe. And exactly those are the ones who will decide the sales of consoles in the future, so I think Ninty has a fair chance.

But yeah, I may be totally wrong, I have no evidence whatsoever, so don't take my opinion too seriously.

Here’s some anecdotal evidence for you - no one I know in real life has a Switch, be it kids or adults. With regards to kids, I think most of them are playing CoD, FIFA and GTA anyway. Or if they’re playing on the Switch now, they will graduate to the PS platform at some point.

How about Nintendo starts with adding more languages to it's system? The Switch is available in 8 different Europeans languages while this number goes up to 18 for the PS4.

Kids play Fortnite on PS4 not Mario

Yes.

PS4 does not have Mario games. Why is Nintendo ignoring kids and not releasing any Mario games for PS4!

This thread delivered many more baffling responses than I expected. While I did say in the original post that I would delve into a deep analysis, that was never going to happen. That's because the numbers show that Sony's dominance in Europe is a myth, therefore the premise is wrong, therefore there's no problem that needs to be addressed.

The original PlayStation launched over 22 years ago and since then Sony has beat Nintendo in consoles sales by less than 1m units per year on average. That's nowhere close to dominance when the size of the European market is considered.

Some may say that the presented data is skewed because handheld consoles are included, but since Switch is the successor to both Nintendo's home console and handheld console lines, it is mandatory for handhelds to be included. Otherwise it would be impossible to make any sort of competent and credible analysis of the European market.

The Switch's current hardware price (€330 in almost all countries that use € as currency) prevents it from harnessing the majority of Europe's handheld market at the moment, but it's a given that the price will go down eventually, so in the future Nintendo can fully exploit the monopoly they have obtained. Someone like fatslob may laugh at this thread (again, I don't believe that he believes what he says) because the PS4 sold 6m in the timeframe that Switch sold 3.9m, but so far Switch has sold first and foremost to the people who buy Nintendo home consoles, so Nintendo's full strength has yet to materialize in the European market.

And yes, Nintendo's home consoles may not have sold well in Europe when they were global failures, but that's a completely irrelevant point when Switch is already established as a global success.

By the end of the year, the top 4 selling consoles in Europe will be Sony consoles. So, it’s no myth. Europe = Sony land. Also, the world = Sony world.

Without FIFA and GT this is just a pipe dream.

The inclusion of handheld consoles isn't an issue for the purposes of using the data in relation to the Switch, the inclusion of 9 Nintendo systems in comparison to 5 PlayStation systems certainly does skew the data however. The Switch is a single system.

Average EU Sales per Sony System: 31.1m
Average EU Sales per Nintendo System: 21.2m (not including Switch)

Now only taking the 5 BEST systems from Nintendo (DS, 3DS, Wii, GBA, GB/GBC) we get an average of 30.2m, still lower, and with advantages in Nintendo's favour such as the PS4 still having a lot of sales to come, and Nintendo's mistakes and failures being wiped away, unlike the remaining Vita.
If everyone that bought a handheld and a home console in previous Nintendo Gens was a unique person then this wouldn't be an issue, as it stands however the data is skewed.

Make a Mario Strikers and see how Europe reacts to that. I mean it should do FIFA numbers easily

They should sponsor a soccer team or cycling team (much cheaper).

Pro Cycling Manager as console exclusive for Switch

And didn't they basically give away Switches to Real Madrid Players (or was it another team?), who then posted pictures of the players playing on their Switch in-flight?

Pokemon and more presence in the smaller European markets will help.

ANDY MURRAY:- GRAND SLAM WINNER!

In my opinion the N64 was not just the best console of the 5th gen but, to this day the best console ever created!

"Europe is Sonyland."
-Conventional wisdom

It didn't slip past my attention that Europe is commonly considered a Sony territory, even by Nintendo fans. The big question that everyone is asking is what Nintendo can do to make it less one-sided with Switch. I will answer this question in this thread.

Here are some observations I have made about the European market.  The UK console market is the largest market for any single European country, however it seems significantly different than the console market for mainland Europe.  In the UK Microsoft does fairly well and Nintendo has a harder time.  In the rest of Europe Nintendo does extremely well, but Microsoft has a much harder time.  Sony does well everywhere.  So when you lump all of these countries together it tends to put Sony on top, because it is doing well everywhere.

I would say if Nintendo wants to do better it needs 2 different strategies.  In the UK it needs to convince Sony/Microsoft consumers to "Switch" to Nintendo.  In the rest of Europe Nintendo simply needs to grow the market.  It's already #1 in a lot of European countries, but it can still bring in more people.

Pretty much this.

Nintendo screwed itself in the UK with the NES and is chasing behind it's opponents ever since there, first SEGA, then SONY and to a lesser degree Microsoft. But I feel that it's slowly getting better, and while that won't be nearly enough to catch the PS4 there, I do think the difference between Nintendo and Sony in the future and for future consoles will be getting smaller and smaller.
