$10? I thought Sea of Thieves was a full-priced game? At least it is when I check Amazon.

Game pass costs $10 per month, so you could play SoT for a full month for $10.

That should be fantastic for all those surely-very-sincere posters in this thread that are 'devastated' that the game supposedly lacks content

Welcome back to VGC. Thought you died.

Massively Multiplayer Online game.  Yes it is an MMO.

There isn't anything massive about a 20 person instanced server.

There's no persistent world, you don't log in to a specific server.  It's not an MMO.

By your definition, CoD is an MMO.

Well, this is taken from mmorpg.com...

Sea of Thieves is a piratical MMO from Rare and Microsoft Game Studios, for both Xbox One and Windows 10 PCs. be the pirate you want to be, sale the open waters with your crew, fight rival pirates, explore, find treasure, and make a name for yourself on the high seas.

I wouldn't call Sea of Thieves an MMO, Rare themselves call it 'SWAG' which stands for 'Shared World Adventure Game'.

Well, the world is massive, it's mostly multiplayer, and only playable only online.  What else is an MMO then without being an RPG?

If the developers arent calling it an MMO, its not an MMO.

The massive portion of massive doesn't have to do with the size of the world, but the quantity of players available to play in it.  While the term MMO has gotten some stretching in recent years, the general rule of having a persistent world (meaning it is ALWAYS active and not only available in instanced chunks) is still the guiding principle of the genre.  This is why MMO games like FFXIV, WoW, DAoC, all have you log in to specific servers, so your persistent world is right there available to you.  The fact that you don't log in to a specific server to play with specific people (and I don't just mean your team but also your opponents) makes Sea of Thieves NOT an actual MMO game.

That an MMO website decides to call it an MMO doesn't really mean much other than they are striving for hits and stretching that definition.

Planetside was/is (if its still around) an MMO and it was/is a shooter.

That creates a lot of confusion though if we base the genre on what the developers say.

Oh it certainly can.  And I expanded on my thought with an edit between your quote and this post.  I think more about what they don't say is important.  I am sure Rare would've loved to tap the MMO crowd by calling the game an MMO.  They knew though that it wasn't and probably didn't want the backlash of trying to brand it as such.  Similar to the issues Bungie faced when they tried to present Destiny as an MMOFPS game.

We got that fresh new bias

MondoXbox - 83

Rare delivered a completely new kind of game, mainly focused on letting people create their own adventures alone or with friends, and where everyone is on a level playing field. While the game succeeds in this delivering a very entertaining and visually stunning experience, we feel that it would have greatly benefited from more encounter/mission types and a richer world lore. Hopefully this will be addressed in the coming months.

and we got a fair review

Dualshockers - 60

Sea of Thieves is a mixed bag of emotions for me. It’s a great social experience to play with a group of friends and sail on the prettiest water you will ever see in a video game. It’s also bogged down by tedious and repetitive voyages that reward you with meager pay. When you can eventually purchase an item, it will only affect how you look. If that is the case, it seems puzzling that I can’t create a character I want to flaunt to any passerby. There is enjoyment to be found in Sea of Thieves, but not enough to keep you interested in the long term.

Still at 69, so I wonder if that's what it's going to end at.
