Viva pinanata was pretty good, tbh. And also rare replay, but I see why that wouldn't count.

Besides, the first two Kinect sports games sold very well as well.

Ha. Viva Pinata is closing in on being 12 years old. I owned it, sunk about 30 hours into it, and didn't understand why it got the praise it got. I guess it just wasn't for me. I thought Kameo was pretty decent.

viva piñata, trouble in paradise came out in 2008, so 10 years. The point you made still stand though, it's been a long, long time.

Bet with Intrinsic:

The Switch will outsell 3DS (based on VGchartz numbers), according to me, while Intrinsic thinks the opposite will hold true. One month avatar control for the loser's avatar.

If these clowns are holding out content for a specific time they should scrap that idea and drop it ASAP.

Metacritic is 67....oh dear, bye bye Rare. Hopefully the employees can find work quickly.

This feels more like a social experience then a typical game. I'm actually kinda enjoying it but its difficult to recommend, that depends if you have people you want to play with I suppose.

So this game will rely on sales and active users over critics I suppose. It sounds like sales may actually be solid though. Maybe it encouraged many to get Gamepass.

Eitherway, I dont think this game is the end of Rare.

The game does have content issues for sure but it is still a fun time, especially with friends. Having said that I can't help but wonder if Microsoft got greedy with this game. 2 years ago when it was announced it was announced as a $30 title. I pre ordered it that day and am glad I did after they bumped it up to a full $60 game, but it seems like they doubled the price without adding enough content to justify that

From a technical perspective, its more impreasive than the usual $20-40. Could have had a big budget even if its shallow.

It doesent feel like a $60 experience but I think they made a unique online game though. In my opinion they should put this on Steam ASAP. Could do well there and it would be more people for cross play.

Erm no thanks, I would love to see more from Rare. And as much as you hate the game, others actually love it. Its unique and something new. I much rather more risks like SoTs than the same old sequels we get every year.

Why would you support shutting down a studio?

I'm not even invested in the game ...

And I support studio's producing the best results they can, everything else is secondary and Rare has been on a bad streak lately ...

his philosophy is that "the developers are only as good as their last release"(paraphrasing). Its obviously a very flawed philosophy because if studios were shut down after one bad outing, so many great games we know and love wouldn't exist.

It still remains true and I didn't imply that a studio can't redeem itself but right now Rare is sub-par considering their pedigree and the same goes for many other developers until they learn to standout or die trying ...

Rare has been profitable nearly every year while LH was bleeding money. I don't see them closing anytime soon

SoT already surpassed my expectations with over 1m players, I think MS will be happy with it's performance.

It'll be interesting to see the revenue stream of SoT a couple months after the game launches ...

Thats my main issue with GaS. They are most likely holding content to release little by little. By the time they decide to release that content the image of te ip might be to far damaged.

It takes genuine talent to see greatness in yourself despite your absence of genuine talent.

I understand the $60 price tag. I really do. In terms of work hours, this game will probably end up with more than most full priced games. It might already be there, assuming they've been working on additional content as soon as they finished the "base game". They probably have a lot of updates queued and ready to test as soon as they're done with initial bug fixes and patches.

However, that's a pretty tough sell to consumers. A lot of people don't want to drop $60 on promises.

On the other hand, if they're pushing "games as a service" then they won't really care about that as much. The key there, of course, will be continued exposure. Expect to see a continued "Sea of Thieves" presence during Xbox conferences in the same way that Bethesda always talks about Elder Scrolls Online. They want people to bite on that subscription. It's okay if it launches as a simple shell of a game as long as they keep adding content, which creates the impression that it's a great deal for the consumer. Perception is of the utmost importance.

Why is a subscription so valuable? It's a rock steady revenue stream. It looks small but it builds up rapidly, especially considering the "it's only a few dollars a month lol" way some people think.

I recently had a coworker tell me that they've been an Xbox Live member for like 10 years. Not all that spectacular, really, but then they laughed and said they even went a few years of that without even owning an Xbox console. They just let it ride on their parent's credit card.

People like that are the reason why subscription models are so attractive.

The most it's gotten is a 67 on Meta Critic? Was all of Rare's hard work for nothing? -_-

its first review, was a 82.. they got that only hours after it launched.
It was probably rushed and by pro MS reviewers.

Running joke is that there 4 skeletions / 2 boats in the game, and it took them 4-5 years of developement time.
Hence the 1 skeletion / year gag.

The no progression backfired heavily, and it does feel like not much work was put into the game (from the outside looking in).
Rare should have taken a year more and added more content to the world before launching it.

If they can get gamepass to profit they will make more in the long run off of the whole operation than they ever would with exclusives. Because of the change of economics, helm games would be judged by how they keep traffic going and subscriptions running. The netflix model will force them to have to increase their quality and justify the yearly subscription.

I disagree, I think this will make them NOT want to increase their quality either. I dont think Microsoft cares or ever cared about making their own quality stuff at least not on the level of the other two. This way they can make money and not have to do much which is kinda what they've seem to be trying to do since the start of the gen. Now they can be like "well the games arent all that, but its only 10 bucks a month!" Not bad really

Thats the problem, Phil Spencer's true plan can only unfold at this point towards and onward towards next gen. All Phil could do was fix what the past leadership had done. Whatever happens with Gamepass and Xbox next gen is all on Phil. If Gamepass does succeed it will depend upon exclusives to hoist itself up because it will worth its own weight in gold (literally). It would be more profitable than selling games by themselves.

Phil Spencer has been head of Xbox for years now, and he was even head of the dev studios before that. The "it's not his fault, it's all because of the guys before him" excuse has stopped working a long time ago.

And if someone says "You can't recover from a launch fail", the PS3 proved that wrong.
