Why not Chrono? At least he’s a similar looking video game character and not some obscure Japanimation character from the 60s or 70s.

Obscure (adj.):
1. not discovered or known about; uncertain.
2. not clearly expressed or easily understood.
3. not important or well known.
4. hard to make out or define; vague.

Out of the two, Chrono is the one who better fits the definition of 'obscure.' Hell, half the Smash Bros. roster is obscure. Goku is a far more popular and recognizable character than Shulk, Pit, Lucina, Ness, Little Mac, Samus, or Captain Falcon will ever be. If you added him to the roster, he would be the most popular character in the game that's not Mario-related, Pokemon-related, or Pac-Man.

This statement comes after a thread was made about Latin Americans having live screenings of the latest episode of Dragon Ball Super that had as many as TEN THOUSAND PEOPLE watching it.
One could make the case that he is more popular in other parts in the world like Latin America than in Southeast Asia.

Also, like how you can say that people who have never played a video game in their lives know who Mario are Pikachu are, and people who have never read a comic book in their lives know who Superman is; We could very well reach the point, one day, where people who have never seen an anime or read manga in their lives will know who Goku is, if we haven't already.

Lucina, Shulk, Samus, and the others are all Nintendo characters. They’re supposed to be in Nintendo games about Nintendo characters. Not obscure Japanamation character from some even more obscure cult of 10,000 Americans who have decided to speak a dead language!

Boy do I have some bad news for you.
Plus I can guarantee that you could walk up to just about any American under 40, and if you asked them who Goku was, then they would know who you're talking about.

Voted yes, even though I dont really play smash.

I like the idea of how silly it would be to have Goku face off vs say Kirby, Mario, Ryu ect.
It would be fun to watch.

I can already imagine Kirby doing a Kamehameha... that would be so cute!

Goku is a fighting game icon. Even if he started off as a manga and anime character.

What do you have against him? Why are you getting this annoyed over the idea?

Because it breaks a core value for the Smash Bros. brand. Solid Snake and Sonic the Hedgehog getting into Smash Bros. Brawl was fine because they were already video game icons, and Goku's already been in so many fighting games of his own, so if you want to fight as Goku just get a Dragon Ball game.

Smash Bros' core value was already broken when Sonic and Snake joined the game.

DBZ is a global phenomenon it's pretty much at the same level as Pokemon in terms of brand recognition, hell game companies like Nintendo wish they created DragonBall since it's a national icon and one of the most succesful Japanese names in media ever. Dragon Ball the anime is better than DBZ anime though.

It wouldn't work? How come?

Please elaborate on why you think a fighting game character wouldn't work in a fighting game like Smash, while there are other characters with similar abilities or moves that currently do work.

Because Smash is a commemoration of gaming (a "gaming all-stars" if you will), so the moment you start to include non-gaming characters, the whole concept falls apart.

Smash Bros was originally a Nintendo all-stars then it became a gaming all-stars only for those who appeared at least ONCE on a Nintendo console until Cloud came along.

Please explain, i like both but i don't get why some would prefer Kid Goku over Adult for a Smash game.

Kid Goku's attacks I feel with fit better with Smash (Power Pole, Nimbus, Kamahameha being the only beam, etc). Adult Goku would feel more... Generic.

I can see where you're coming from but Adult Goku would feel anything but generic. Generic is what i would call all the sword wielders and clones already present in Smash, it's ridiculous and wasted character slots. Goku would be a great and fresh character, his flying would need to be limited though.

It seems like everyone wants a ton of 3rd-party characters these days, to the point that the series is becoming more like a video game all-stars title rather than Nintendo all-stars.

That idea died a long time ago with Brawl.

ive seen more memes and ironic joke threads about Dragon Ball than anything else, and i would argue a big chunk of its brand recognition stems from that. not to mention people have been pretty critical of the more recent incarnations of the show, and most of the games in general. im sure it wasnt always like this, but its at a point where i cant take it seriously

you bring up pokemon, which is and has been the biggest cultural phenomenon of the modern era since Red and Blue were released. every game in the main series receives critical acclaim, it has its own store chain, entire networks of website, TCG leagues, and communities who actually play the games and discuss it in an organized manner. all beyond anything ive seen from Dragon Ball.

Well, Goku checks out in terms of that. Nintendo has been breaking their own rules for Smash for a while. They just have been doing it a step at a time. I wouldn't be surprised if Goku came to smash but I would be laughing at all the responses.

Honestly, I don't care anymore. Ever since Cloud came to Smash I saw that now anyone can be in Smash.

Really? That's when you realized anything goes in Smash? You should have been around when Snake showed up in the Brawl trailers.

Are we actually using Cloud as an excuse for Goku?

Cloud is an icon for a long lasting series that has a big ties with Nintendo. Goku represents nothing.

Well Cloud is mostly known in the hardcore videogame community, Goku is known in pretty much every community out there.

LOL! Seriously the irony in your comment is unreal.

Goku's creator, Akira Toriyama, is the same guy who designed the characters in Chrono Trigger and Dragon Quest and he was chosen for this because of his highly succesful masterpiece Dragon Ball. So if anything Chrono is the obscure videogame character and should bow down to Goku.

Cloud is an icon that represents Square turning their back on Nintendo. Perfect fit for Smash.

Exactly, i'll admit that I found Cloud's inclusion pretty cool but at the same time a dumb move by Nintendo including one of the main backstabbers when they most needed them. Not only that, Square turned their backs on Nintendo ever since and never gave them another mainline FF game, we've yet to see if the FF 7 Remake will ever make it to Nintendo consoles which seems even more unlikely.

It would be pretty cool if Goku got put into Smash, but I'm against it because it'll open the gateway for a bunch of other animu/mango characters to be continuously be asked to be put into Smash. The only Shounen series I've regularly watched/read is Jojo and Hero Academia, and I'm not okay with having Jotaro or Deku going up in a fight against Mario, Link, Sonic, or any Smash character.
Except Captain Falcon, because that would be fucking sick.

The only other anime character who rivals Goku's popularity on a global scale is Pikachu, whom is already present in Smash so i really don't think other anime characters like Luffy or Naruto will make it into Smash.

Yeah i can tell you don't know much about Dragon Ball. Most of those recent memes and jokes are aimed at Dragon Ball Super and i'll be honest with you... I don't watch that shit.

The fact that Dragon Ball Z has so many videogames, animes, trading cards, toys and is known worldwide is because it's a really good show. 1984 - 1997 was the Dragon Ball golden age in Japan, 1999 - 2004 was the golden age in the rest of the world. I'm telling you it's really that good and most of the kids here don't seem to like it simply because it's anime, apparantely anime is for weirdos and pedophiles. Even if you don't like anime you should give Dragon Ball 1986 a watch.

Yes, but none of them are Final Fantasy 7 which is the game Cloud's design was based on in Smash 4 not from spinoffs. Goku has been pretty much on every Nintendo consoles since the NES back when they renamed it Dragon Power!!!

Yeah i cringe everytime i see Ganondorf get his ass handed to him by Jigglypuff and not only that, but in terms of tier list Ganondorf is actually one of the weaker guys of the whole game!

Because you are comparing it to Pokémon, bar pokémon, Dragon Ball is maybe the most popular one. Also, both franchises are handled differently, you have to admit Pokémon from it's conception has been made to sell this compulsory idea that you have to catch everything, buy everything, etc... Much like other IPs that have had anime and toy variations like Beyblade or Yu Gi Oh. Just considering anime, I'd say Dragon Ball is bigger than Pokémon

Fact is, Dragon Ball might be the most influential shonen of all time and other hugely popular ones such as Naruto or Hunter x Hunter wouldn't be like they are.

Oh, and most recent Dragon Ball game did pretty well both in critics and sales, we also got many games in years in which we didn't have any new Dragon Ball source media. Dragon Ball Super has picked up since it started like shit too. If he was in Smash, he would be the most popular character in the game after Pikachu, Mario and maybe Pacman.

That said, I understand that he didn't originate as a videogame character and I understand why that would be a reason not to have him even though I would probably enjoy it.

Is hyperbole dead?

Really though, there's no argument for Goku in Smash other than "I want him" as he simply isn't a video game character. Popularity won't help that case or we would've had Luke Skywalker by now and wouldn't have had Duck Hunt Dog.
