Forums - Nintendo Discussion - The Switch has a surprising lack of local multiplayer games

The Wii U did not mount to much, but one area where it shined was being a damn good game console for party games, or local multiplayer games. games such as Nintendo Land, NSMBU, and Game & Wario, among many others were all great games and I loved getting a group of friends together to play them. Even this year I have found myself pulling out my Wii U again just to play these games. And it really feels strange that with the Switch console supporting 2 players right out of the box, there has been a surprising lack of good local multiplayer games (4 player local, specifically), which is weird for Nintendo.

So far there have only been a few big hits. Off the top of my head I can only think of Mario Kart 8 DX and Super Bomberman R. one of those is a port, and the other is of questionable quality. other than that we have Kirby Star Allies which releases soon, and Smash Bros which releases later this year. for a Nintendo platform that is an incredibly small pool of games, to a point where I have to rely on indie titles such as Overcooked to fill the void.

now, am  I saying this is a bad thing? No. from a single-player standpoint the Switch's lineup is the best Nintendo has has in years, and I am still anticipating a good amount of upcoming Switch titles. but it just feels odd that Nintendo, who has been known for making great party games for decades, has not been pushing that for the Switch. Im really starting to crave a new Mario Party, or a new 2D platformer, or really anything that i can play with friends as were all waiting for the Switch's big titles to drop. or maybe there are some other great party games for the Switch that Ive just been blind to, and if so, let me know what they are.

There is Pokken Tournament, and Mario Tennis Aces and Yoshi are comming

But yeah, they are not the focus as it was in the Wii U.Thank God for that.

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

Yeah, I think it's pretty weird how they've been ignoring same console local play lately. For example, I was really expecting them to bring back an improved version of that local mode in Splatoon for the sequel when it was announced, but we got nothing instead.

This trend of having local play where the other person also needs to have a Switch plus the game kinda sucks, especially in my case since the Switch is not exactly common in Brazil and none of my friends have one. Where are the couch multiplayer games Nintendo?

Mario + Rabbids has local multiplayer?  That's pretty nifty.

That is actually a huge list, especially when you consider that Switch has only been on the market for a year.  The deceptive thing about Switch is that it actually has a lot of great single player games already.  Nintendo hasn't had a home console like that in a while.  It is easy to forget that it has a lot of great multiplayer games too.

Well so much for this thread!

Local multiplayer is especially a key point now that it can be done on the go via split joy-cons.

Do you mean first-party local mp games?

Because on the third-party front, there are a lot of them. Nine Parchments, Mantis Burn Racing, and Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime are good ones. Human: Fall Flat and Brawlout have their moments.

If you didn't try Runbow on WiiU, I highly recommend it when it drops on Switch: http://www.vgchartz.com/article/275376/runbow-launches-april-24-for-switch-ps4/. Up to 8 players locally!

Give it time, the console hasn't been out for that long.
