Forums - Gaming Discussion - Is ESRB really needed?

It is desperately needed. If the Video Game industry didnt regulate itself then the government would step in. For you 15 year olds that like your M rated games that would mean the cashier would be IDing you and suffer fines for selling to minors so it would happen far less. It would be like buying tobacco or pornography.

they should at least let people that look old enough to buy the game buy it no?

im 15 and some people swear im 18

Yes they are needed, even if a lot of people don't follow them, it's still there for a reason and serves a purpose.

But deep down, the supervisor has to make the right choice, if a movie is rated PG and there's all kind of nudity and violence, I won't justify showing it to a bunch of young kids because of the rating.

I'm not sure if you are joking or not, but if you are being serious, just because you look old doesn't mean you are mature.

I cant tell if your serious of not either. Looks have nothing to do with ratings. When I worked at a smoke shop we had to card anyone who might be under 35 to buy a pack of smokes. When I managed a Video store your exactly the kind of guy (from the sounds of it) that I would have to card for M rated games.

The ESRB is greatly needed but it needs to be more refined. The need more ratings for kids between 6 - 10 and 13 - 16. The T rating is pointless and tells jake.

PC gaming is better than console gaming. Always.     We are Anonymous, We are Legion    Kick-ass interview   Great Flash Series Here    Anime Ratings     Make and Play Please

Sure! How could you define mature gaming without the likes of the ESRB?

Reality has a Nintendo bias.

i think its the parents job to do what esrb does.

I don't think a lot of you realize what it is the ESRB does. They don't control or censor the content of games like a parent does, they just assign a rating. In other words, they're there to help the parents do their job. While it would obviously be best if every parent kept abreast of the details of every game that comes out, it's obviously not practical for all of them to do that. The ESRB rating is just an easy way to give them an idea of what's in a game.

The problems start when governments come along and try to edge their way into the business of the ratings boards.

I believe that the ESRB Is need because it is a self regulatory body. If we did not have the ESRB it would be some other rating board that would probably be controlled by the government. I can't imagine how much the videogaming in general would suffer if it was left up to the US government to decide.

Systems I own (Games)

Sega: Dreamcast (40) , Saturn (25), Genesis (50), Masters System (10), Game Gear (20)

Sony: PS1 (8), PS2 (60) , PS3 (5), PSP (12)

Atari: 2600 (18) , 7800 (10), Lynx (10)

They all pretty much said it.

The only reason anyone would want it gone is because of missplaced blame (bad parenting, Government control/regulations, game not rated proberly {needs reform not removal},etc.)

"Back off, man. I'm a scientist."

Your theories are the worst kind of popular tripe, your methods are sloppy, and your conclusions are highly questionable! You are a poor scientist. Especially if you think the moon landing was faked.
