Even if the models aren't just downscaled for 3DS, I would think they could still just update the models, they wouldn't have to make completely new ones from scratch saving them loads of time n effort. Plus come on, rebooting the series just so you don't have to deal with 800+ pokemon models is quite the lazy excuse.

The 3DS models / assets are unusable.

If Nintendo / Game Freak wants to have anything resembling a quality product, everything will need to be redone.
Animations.
Models.
Textures.
Sounds.
AI.
Nothing in the 3DS titles is even close to being adequate for a console release.

Yeah, I know some consider Game Freak lazy (even though I don't really see it), but I don't think they would be that lazy to just porting all 3DS assets into HD and call it a day.

Well you might think so but it remains to be seen if Nintendo does or not. If the game truely does release this year I would be very surprised if it's truely made from the ground up.

I did say to update them if they weren't already HD models but downscaled.

Gamefreak handles reboots more subtly than other series and people may be disappointed by what is meant by “reboot”. Pokemon Black and White were reboots. Nearly 1:1 reboot of Gen 1 with Pokemon in Gen 5 directly mimicking the Gen 1 Pokemon. Some also consider Gen 6 a soft reboot in which games from Gen 6 onwards have no canonical relevance to Gen 1-5, with the exception of Pokemon Emerald... but thats spoiler territory

Reboot can mean many things for Pokemon, none of which include Pokemon changing its gameplay much. We’ll probably see either:
a. A remake of Gen 1 w/ Switch hardware
b. Gen 8 being a reboot similar to how Gen 5 was
c. Gen 8 being a soft reboot like Gen 6 was

All I know is, I believe that Mega Evolution will be cut in the process

In B and C examples I wouldn't call them reboots than. They just have no link to past stories.

And I don't agree with the idea that literally anyone but competitive heads and purists, of which I am both, cares at all about keeping the battle system. If you asked 20 mil fans if they'd rather Pokemon be turn based or more "like the tv show," I'd bet real money that at least 18m of them would pick the different battle system. And only a few thousand of those would actually be into competitive battling.

Well, would would "like the TV show" even entail? An FMV with QTEs?

Personally I think the FF13 battle system would be perfect for a Pokemon game aiming to be like the show. The ATB gauge keeps it turn based and strategic, and the fact that it's split up into segments with different moves taking different amounts would allow Pokemon to fire off weaker moves in quick succession or combine moves as they do in the anime. It could also add dodges (which are frequently used in the anime) by pressing a button to sacrifice a portion of the ATB gauge for a chance to dodge an attack.

Ew no way. The battle system in FF13 is widely disliked for being bland and requiring little effort. You would have to shred so many layers of depth to make Pokemon work with it, such as having more than one attack.

Huh, I wonder what that would mean. Cut all the previous pokemon and start from scratch again? Do a new battle system and machanics? Change the badge system to something else? Makes me real curious if this is true. Not what I was expecting. I was thinking more just a remake of gen 1 but with much better graphics.

umm... the FF13 characters all had WAY more than one attack. So why would you have to take that away?

Eh, I don't feel like explaining for a hypothetical scenario that'll never happen anyway. :L

Sounds interesting. I would like to see somethibg fresh and new.

Altering the battle system too much is a bad idea, imo. It's just too inherent to the franchise and they would stand to lose far more than whatever they could gain in terms of the core fanbase shunning it. Pokemon is a franchise with a fanbase that guarantees 15m+ lifetime sales for each main installment. You don't want to alienate too much of that audience, bad idea. Battles still need to keep the type chart and be primarily turn based. Where they should experiment is in the open world aspect and linearity.

Which is why the game's not coming this year. Even if we get a reveal this year.
