Forums - Nintendo Discussion - RUMOUR: Pokémon switch to be a reboot of the franchise

Gamefreak handles reboots more subtly than other series and people may be disappointed by what is meant by “reboot”. Pokemon Black and White were reboots. Nearly 1:1 reboot of Gen 1 with Pokemon in Gen 5 directly mimicking the Gen 1 Pokemon. Some also consider Gen 6 a soft reboot in which games from Gen 6 onwards have no canonical relevance to Gen 1-5, with the exception of Pokemon Emerald... but thats spoiler territory

Reboot can mean many things for Pokemon, none of which include Pokemon changing its gameplay much. We’ll probably see either:
a. A remake of Gen 1 w/ Switch hardware
b. Gen 8 being a reboot similar to how Gen 5 was
c. Gen 8 being a soft reboot like Gen 6 was

All I know is, I believe that Mega Evolution will be cut in the process

Honestly with what Nintendo has done with their franchises so far on Switch like Zelda and Mario. This would make complete sense. I don't buy it though. Gamefreak plays things safe

It shouldn't. The games do absolutely nothing to promote that depth. You've never been forced to do one complex thing in and campaign Pokemon battle since the first games 20+ years ago, so how would "most people" find that out?

Possibly by playing competitively. I'm guessing that's what the original comment was referring to.

I know that's what the comment is referring to. The point I'm making is that competitive battling isn't something most people do, and the reason for that is because the games do nothing to promote or encourage that. It's an extremely niche path by design, so the original commenter being "baffled" that "most people" aren't aware of the battle system's depth is senseless.

Reboot in what sense? This is too vague for me to reach a conclusion about it. The only thing I can say is that I hope they don't change the combat system.

Please dont do the original 151 in kanto, I'm sick of gen 1 pandering.

Please be 160 or so new pokemon in a brand new region. Except this time, take your time, and dont have the shit pokemon design of gen 5 and 6. The gen 7 pokemon designer should be at the helm.

Bet with Intrinsic:

The Switch will outsell 3DS (based on VGchartz numbers), according to me, while Intrinsic thinks the opposite will hold true. One month avatar control for the loser's avatar.

Maybe they could keep the turn based battle system for normal battles but they could also add some battles with an with an action battle system. I think they could implement it like those 3 vs. 3 fight in Gen 5? So they could test the water for an action RPG Pokemon with that approach. What do you think haha^^ Maybe that would mean too much work.......

Sounds like a terrible idea, but it all comes down to the execution of course. Even if that guy is credible I'm just not gonna put any stock into this.

As long as they keep the battle system the same, don't use VA, and also don't forget that the other 700+ Pokémon that came after the original 151 ones exist, I'd probably be okay with it (But what would be the point of a reboot then?). That's assuming this is real of course, which I don't.

Also, whatever you do Game Freak, please don't go the open-world route, I already lost Zelda.

There's actually a quite large competitive pokemon battling scene.

Yup. Better sound, better graphics... but that's about it. One look at sales for the recent game tells you that people like it as it is. No need to mess with it imo.

People said the same about Monster Hunter guess what they were all wrong.

The new Monster Hunter isnt that different. If Monster Hunter changed into a first person skyrim style youd have a point.
