Mario already had 1.5 million units sitting on store shelves by the end of December, Zelda didn't have that. I think the last quarter was an exception.

That suggests Mario was overshipped and is even slower than expected, tho.

It just had to catch up, and even then, the Sell through of Mario Odyssey was 1.5 million higher than Botw anyways.

They'll both lose to MK8:D

True this

At this point in its life, Twilight Princess had sold over 5.62M (4.30M Wii, >1.32M GCN). Super Mario Galaxy had sold 6.10M.

The final sales of each game:
Twilight Princess: 8.85M
Super Mario Galaxy: 12.77M

BotW has exceeded TP by 77.6%, while Odyssey has exceeded Galaxy by 70.7%.

If we do some naive number-crunching:
Breath of the Wild LT: 15.72M
Super Mario Odyssey LT: 21.79M

No it wasn’t. They were both 7.5 million with Wii U included. They were equal, and the gap in shipments has now decreased. Considering Zelda had a higher sell-through rate compared to shipped numbers than SMO, that potentially even suggests Zelda might have a current higher sell-through rate, if anything.

Huh.. I'd say those LT numbers are actually a realistic outcome.

There is a small argument to be made here that because Breath of the Wild is a very different Zelda game that appeals to a much larger audience that it has a chance to challenge Odyssey.

That said, Mario is Mario and Zelda is Zelda. Zelda is a game and Mario is a brand. He's the jam to Nintendo's peanut butter. You don't see Nintendo without seeing or thinking Mario(and more recently Pikachu). On top of that, Nintendo will market Mario games much more, as he is their home console killer app.

I'm clearly not counting the Wii U version,
