Wow.

So how long are you guys gonna argue about this?  The US isn't even 300 years old.  400 years of slavery refers to the length of time that the Transatlantic Slavery Trade existed transporting slaves from African countries to places around the world.   It is not a misconception.  It is not an SJW trick.  The term has nothing to do with the existence of the United States.

You guys... man just wow.

I'm not sure anyone has mentioned 400 years of slaves in the US.  Just 400 years of black slavery.  But the main point is that "400 years" is an oft used statement to describe the time frame.  For Kanye to just randomly say 400 years without any insinuation of the known phrase is ridiculous.   He said "400 years" because of that oft used phrase.  Therefore he meant physical slavery.

Can't believe we have people here and elsewhere actually believing he was expressing ONLY mental slavery.

But hell, let's actually look at that angle.  400 years of mental slavery.  How is that time period determined?  400 years ago was 1618.  What established and factored into 400 years of mental slavery starting around 1618?

Actually they were arguing that it wasn't 400 years of slavery in the US and so the term was a SJW creation or misinterpertation.  They are so far off base it is n't funny and kinda embarrassing.   Kayne is talking specifically about the African Slave Trade through the Atlantic (because that is the only thing he could be talking about).  The African slave trade began in the 1500s and continued to the late 1800 or for all intents and purposes about 400 years.

What Kanye is trying to insinuate is that for them to be slaves for that period of time, they had to be mentally damaged because according to him, the salves outnumbered their 'masters' (which is correct objectively) and that they could have overthrown them.

I don't see what his point is.  So lets say they were both physically in bondage and and mentally enslaved through violence and assault.  He makes it sound like it is the slaves to blame for being forced into slavery.  Its ridiculous on the face of it.  Basically, according to him their cannot be victims.  If someone hurts you, it is your fault and your fault alone.   It is dumb, it is dangerous, and it is like failing to understand the real world around you because you can't understand the past.

“You hear about slavery for 400 years. For 400 years? That sounds like a choice,” he said. “Like, that was there for 400 years and it’s all of y’all? It’s like, we’re mentally in prison. I like the word ‘prison’ because slavery is too direct to the idea of blacks. Like Holocaust is Jews, slavery is blacks. So prison is something that unites us as one race, whites and blacks being one race. The human race.”

West is mocking the Jewish holocaust in his explanation about slavery is a choice. It is indefensible. Classic victim blaming mentality.

It's neither a misinterpretation nor a SJW term.  It's been in use for a few decades as a generalization of the time period of the slave trade.  It's easier to round up to say 400 years of slavery than doing the math to say 368 years (first main transatlantic trade by Portugal 1502 and ended in 1888).

400 years:

"People think they know everything about slavery in the United States, but they don’t. They think the majority of African slaves came to the American colonies, but they didn’t. They talk about 400 years of slavery, but it wasn’t. They claim all Southerners owned slaves, but they didn’t. Some argue it was all a long time ago, but it wasn’t."

This article is a year old and it mentions that "400 years of slavery".

People twist how long slavery was and how long ago it was to fit their world view.

For example my Uncle was under the belief that slavery ended "200 years ago", he's about 50 years off.

Slavery being "400 years" is a well known misconception.

I just posted this:

"[T]o make myself clear. Of course I know that slaves did not get shackled and put on a boat by free will. My point is for us to have stayed in that position even though the numbers were on our side means that we were mentally enslaved"

You're being intellectually dishonest if you can't put the two together.  The only way he could have been any clearer is if he were to literally say that "the black slaves who were enslaved in the US."

Wow.

Thank you for the correction. Reinforces my main point.

He elaborated on what he said several times and said he was talking about mental slavery. Even on the show, he clearly was talking about it that sense.

This is all an attempt to ignore what his points were. This kind of stuff always happens to blacks who admit they are right-leaning or that they don't agree with democrats/progressives. Just keep on condemning him for thinking differently and pushing people to the right. Do you goofy butts not realize how high trump is in the polls and that he's gaining more support in the black community more than ever.

A.) First off no . He was using "mental slavery" as the reason for slavery lasting 400 years.  That's obvious from the several quotes that he made that I shared.

B.) What "400 years of mental slavery" existed?

Because segregation was a longtime part of US law until very recently; and I believe it is still policy in some of the South-US states where they have separate schools, neighbourhoods, and churches for black and white people.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

You are conflating politics with actual history and its not a good look for you.

The reality, the actual reality, is that what Kanye said is wholly irrelevant because the individuals where ACTUALLY physically enslaved.  This has nothing to do with politics.  The Slave Trade was real.  It happened.  It wasn't a mental trip by black people you anus lol.

A perception of reality formed through practices of slaveholders upon the enslaved is nothing to sneeze at.  Stop trying to make the slaves the guilty party.  This is what people are saying about Kayne's comments.  I know this because I'm black and hey guess what:  I get to talk candidly to regular black  people all the time.

Also, the idea that we can't think for ourselves without political influence is offensive. Your opinion of us is stupidly low.  We can think just like you can.

Black people are people too.  We have an entire multitude of beliefs, practices and ideas.  Kanye is not or 'God' or something nor are democrats or Trump or my ideas or yours.  Some of us don't even believe in God.  All I am really saying is that Kayne is free to say whatever he wants to say and so is everyone else. I am pretty sure most can make a very compelling objective argument against his point though.

Kanye West has no real talent in comparison to the great 1990s rappers: Tupac, Biggie Smalls, Easy E, Dr Dre, etc. Kanye West is a Trump supporter, his views have been criticised by African-American in Hollywood, NBA/NFL, etc. Tupac, Biggie Smalls and Easy E were political activists using rap music to make positive changes. Kanye West represents the self-obsessed culture of self and wealth, he does not care about anyone else but Kanye West.

Dr. Dre a great 1990s rapper?
