Forums - Movies & TV - Darkest Hour is pure Oscar bait and a bad movie.

I'm trying to watch all Oscar nominees this year, and today I watched Darkest Hour. I have to say I'm pretty disappointed. Yes, Gary Oldman is one of the best things in this movie, but that doesn't mean much, really. His acting is OK, at best. His voice keeps reminding me of South Park's Cartman and he is always either whispering of shouting. He looks like a caricature of Winston Churchill from a sitcom, honestly. The directing is bland, but there are some interesting shots sometimes.

The script is the worst part. Darkest Hour is basically two hours of men in suits talking to each other. Filmmaking is so incredible because it allows you to tell stories through dialogue and images. But Darkest Hour tells its story entirely through dialogue, so there's no reason for it to be a film. Every information you get from this movie is conveyed through dialogue. They should have just made a radionovela instead.

I have to give credit where credit is due, though. The makeup is amazing.

I concur. So far it's the only best picture nominee I couldn't make it through. Boring, uneventful, might as well be a TV movie on the history channel that they show to highschoolers as punishment.

Today, I watched that (well, about half of it, I gave up and skimmed the rest), The Shape of Water, The Post, and Call me By Your Name.

Of them, I enjoyed The Shape of Water the most. The Post was also quite good; Spielberg manages to make something like reporting interesting.

I have to admit, I skipped like 30 minutes of Darkest Hour. It was too boring for me to watch the whole thing.

I still haven't watched The Post, Phantom Thread and Dunkirk. But from what I've watched, my favourites are Call Me by Your Name and Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri. Lady Bird winning wouldn't make me mad either. The Shape of Water is also amazing, but I have a few problems with it that really bug me. Get Out is good, but nothing remarkable imo

Wow, thanks for the advice. Not watching it.

Bet with Teeqoz for 2 weeks of avatar and sig control that Super Mario Odyssey would ship more than 7m on its first 2 months. The game shipped 9.07m, so I won

Filmmakers who make movies following a formula with the only purpose of being able to write "6 Oscar Nominations" in the poster and profit out of people's curiosity deserve no money.

Dogs never fail to make me happy, so I thought I could cheer some people up if my signature was a cute dog hahaha

Pomeranians are so cute *-* I wish I could have a dog, but it's kind of expensive to take care of one, and being in college I don't exactly have much money to spend hahahaha

(How did we get from Winston Churchill to Pomeranians?)

Interesting... I still need to watch the movie since I'm a big fan of Churchill and find this period in history fascinating. I will post my opinion later.
