Labo is one example mentioned in article, there will definatly be some controls peripherals/addons, also this is very intresting "could also include additional network-related features and peripherals to be attached to its USB Type-C port"
This article talks only about this years plans, not that Nintendo dont plans any Switch revisions, Mini or XL, offcourse that we will have some kind of Switch revisions in future. There is nothing complicated about wider offer of Switch platform. 3DS has price point from $80 to $200 and probably will be discounted in around year, there is no way that Switch will have price point below $250 in around year, not to mention, lower price point like $150. No there is no need for portable-only Switch, but its smart to offer wider offer and lower price point for Switch platform (look at 3DS price point example) instead having only one Switch hardware.

The 3DS just had its best month in three years in the US. Its still has a big user base. The new pokemon games shipped 7.17 million in less than two months. No doubt 3DS is on the wane, but it still has quite a bit of juice left. Its not getting discontinued at least till the end of 2019.
Bet with Intrinsic:
The Switch will outsell 3DS (based on VGchartz numbers), according to me, while Intrinsic thinks the opposite will hold true. One month avatar control for the loser's avatar.
