CoD

Yearly franchise vs yearly franchise, but CoD being multiplat means it can catch up much quicker

True but Pokemon has 2 games a year (people on here know that sales would be quite a bit lower if there was only 1 version) and a 7-year headstart. Pokemon also has a lot more spin-offs (it had 4 just in 2015).

Splitting the game into 2 does make them sell a lot more, but not as much as CoD

The thing that will stall its sales is install base. The reason Pokemon has those numbers is because it sold very well on a handheld that also sold astronomically well. Unless Nintendo starts making handhelds again or their hybrids sell like their handhelds use to, it's going to hurt Pokemon's sales comparatively.

I think it is more important to innovate the game...look at pokemon go... it is the same brand with a different innovation and people got crazy about it

Being multiplat has allowed CoD to catch up but look at last year, for eg, 10M just at retail on the PS4. With digital and if the game was exclusive to the PS4, that number would have reached, what, 20M? Pokemon would be less than 10M if there was a single game, most likely.

Cod will be first to beat pokemon.. Gta will beat it too but it will take 6 or 7 years after gta6 released. That's assuming gta6 can sell 100m in 6 or 7 years just like gta5

6 or 7 years! GTA is only about 30 million behind at the moment

GTAV shipped 30 million in its first month and a half, GTA has been growing with each iteration, Do you honestly think GTAVI won't do some massive numbers at release

Gta is about 70-80m behind, not 30m

Call of Duty has a major release every year, while Pokémon has a lot of remakes / third versions, or sometimes no game at all. CoD also sells better than Pokémon since it's on both PS4 and XBox.

I don't know how this even a question, it's very unlikely that any of these other franchises will outsell CoD anytime soon.

Pokemon sun and moon sold more than 16 Million together so far according to Nintendo.

I don't think that 1/3 of these sales where from people who bought both versions. Normally, one version is enough to get everything, especially by trading Pokemons online.

I could be wrong thou, is this a commun practice among Pokemon fans? Or is there another way sales  could drop so severely with a single release?

Unless no Pokemon games get released ever, don't even think about it. In fact, the Switch Pokemon will make the gap considerably wider and will continue to sell over a good amount of time.

Huh? CoD has sold over 275m as of January 2018, since it's launch in 2003. That's an average of around 19m a year. The only pokemon game to sell more then that is red/blue and gold/silver, and pokemon games aren't even released annually.

CoD Average Yearly Sales: ~19m
Pokemon Average Yearly Sales: ~13.6m

Unless another infinity war comes out and kills the franchise, CoD is very likely going to pass pokemon.

Meanwhile GTA is at over 265m currently, and with GTA V selling 85m units and still going strong somehow, with the release of GTA VI it too has a chance of surpassing pokemon.

The CoD will probably pass it in less than a decade, if everything stays the same. It is very difficult to keep up with a series that sells +10 million each year. Even with how numerous the Pokemon spinoffs are, they can't really make up that number. The GTA series is complicated, because GTA V was such an sales anomaly compared to the previous games (they were always successful, but not THAT successful).

You know it deserves the GOTY.

Like it has been said already, CoD games have been going down sales wise. Meanwhile, Pokemon has the potential to go beyond that. I believe the Switch title will sell better than even Blue and Red. I don't have indicators of it perse, only that a craze like Pokemon Go brings me to that conclusion. I don't know if it can hold it like GTA V and keep selling. However, It is not wise to expect Pokemon to sit like that. Especially not at 13.6m when it does.
