Forums - General Discussion - Do you believe that sites who build platforms for others should allow free speech.

I think...

Free speech laws should be upheld by region 2 9.52%

Free speech laws the site... 0 0%

Speech should be as free as the sites rules 11 52.38%

Speech should be up allow... 4 19.05%

There should be no speech... 3 14.29%

Comments/indifferent.... 1 4.76%

Total:21

Ya, as a business it is up to the site. If you go out of your way to break the rules of the established site, than the site has the ability to remove you.

And who decides what constitutes hate speech? You? Me? The site?

See, it's not that simple I'm afraid.

The site/moderators. Sure, they can never be completely objective, but there are a lot of things that clearly shouldn't be allowed. There are laws against hate, and sites shouldn't let their users break these laws.

Yes but this can also be abused and end up with SJW's and PC rules. In other words a dictatorship of what can and cannot be said.

Also what you consider hate is not necessarily what I consider to be hate and vice versa. Some people consider criticizing religion as a "racist" thing and hate speech. So does that mean if we disagree with a religion we must pretend we agree with it and trying to freely talk about our opinion on that religion should mean legal trouble for us?

I could consider such a lack of free speech as fascist, others would think of it as progress. So you see, even determining what is hate speech is not so simple.

what is hate speech?

i've been hearing recently, for example, that refusing to accept that a trans woman is the same as a biological woman is hate speech, would you agree with that?

Reminds me of Amendment I misconceptions. Often times, people land themselves in trouble when they misinterpret its meaning. In this case, the site has any right to remove you if they please. Like Private Property at a Mall. Sure, you can go on it, shop, and the like. But, if they see fit, you can be removed for any reason (even though, this doesn't happen often). On VGC, stuff like racism, sexism, and any kind of bigotry isn't going to be allowed. Ever. If we open this idea of "free speech", it becomes a tricky business.

Besides, as others have pointed out, sites without a set restriction of speech end up being cesspools (YouTube/WCCFTech).

In other words, freedom is but an illusion because it is always subject to something. A condition, proviso, rule, situation etc.

Here we are not free because it's a private site, in the streets we are not free because what we do there is subject to a country's set of rules. Even living is subject to biological rules (we don't freely decide to be born and when we are born we can't stay alive as we are doomed to eventually die).

We were never free to begin with. Poor humans who seek a freedom they can never obtain.

You know what, with all of your posts on this site, you remind me of the main character of Hatred.

Hatred? Is that a show or a movie or a game? You lost me there.

Ok I just checked a review of that game. The main character is a psychopath that murders everyone he encounters in the street.

In what universe do you think I have even remotely anything to do with such a person?

No, I don't. But sites are free to censor whatever they want. If a site owner thinks that this shouldn't be allowed, he's completely free to ban that user.

But on top of these own rules, sites should also follow some basic general rules. Hate speech can be dangerous, espacially if someone's encouraging others to spread hate too. If someone writes something like "Jews are inferior people and they deserved being killed in the Holocaust", I think it's the responsibility of the site owner to do something about that.
