Forums - General Discussion - Half A Billion Fewer Animals Are Being Killed Every Year Since 2007 As People Eat Less Meat

I honestly think this has more to do with health and environmental reasons. Not many people care about what animal rights activists say.

I rarely eat beef or pork, generally poultry or fish and lots of vegetables, nuts, and various meat substitutes.

I'd be curious about grain consumption as bread is something was taught to eat as a kid, but now less people seem to consume it.

Not eating meat? Hmmm...never thought about that......and I never will again. Yum.

Right? lol

Vegan haters are on the rise, tho; thirsty for a chance to trigger vegans.

Great news. How much is half a billion though? 12 hours?!

I should have clarified that i was talking about pre civilization. We had to pay a certain price for civilization .

That is right. Before the invention of agriculture the people ate meat and what fruits, berries and mushrooms they found. So mostly meat-based. They lived healthier (life expectancy was going down with agriculture at first), worked less and had no interest in owning patches of land and therefore were less fighting and war. The only upside to the invention of agriculture was, that it could support more people. So the agricultural societies outcompeted the former hunting-societies over time.

The reason life expectancy went down is, as far as I know, not related to dietary issues, and more related to the fact that new diseases could much more easily both spread and occur due to the domestication of animals (all of the biggest plagues in mankinds' history have arisen from diseases that jumped from animals to humans, and most again were because of domesticated animals).

EDIT: In our family, I'm pretty sure we've somewhat reduced our overall meat consumption, partially in favour of fish, and partially in favour of vegetables et. al. In general a much healthier diet. Fish is much healthier than red meat, so it's a much better choice. Doesn't work for tacos though. Maybe chicken could be used instead though... Hm...

half a billion what?

What kind of animals.
Chickens?
Cows?

There is a HUGE difference between the two. Half a billion cows is astronomically more meat than half a billion chickens.
Like 750 lbs of meat vs like 2 lbs of meat.

Here's their source. It's primarily chickens. (Which makes sense as they make up the vast majority of the numbers of animals killed, so they'd also make up the vast majority of reductions).

I eat meat every week and I think everyday. I hate vegetables but would like to start trying them but it's so hard. Makes me wanna gag lol. Any tips?

*And no I won't stop eating meat not a suggestion *

Does that mean half a billion animals fewer are being born too? After all no need for them to the industry.

Yes.  But, considering the lives *most* of them will lead, they're probably better off.  Brb eating chicken and bacon.
