Asterix and Obelix XXL on GBA, crazy.

Something I loved about GBA is developers were really pushing the hardware.

At a glance it seems like a portable Super Nintendo. But developers were always pushing its hardware capabilities.

Some of the Need for Speed games were also technically impressive on GBA. They were functional 3D racers but suffered from poor frame rates.

The COD games on Wii. To have the full Modern Warfare campaign on the little system is still astonishing.

Resident Evil 2 for the N64. While power wasn't an issue, the limited cartridge space sure was. This was exactly the sort of game that was supposed to be impossible on a cartridge.

Much of the Dreamcast library, from Crazy Taxi to Marvel vs Capcom 2. I don't think the console industry has ever seen such perfect ports of arcade games before or since.  While that was basically the benchmark for the console, I think it stood out at the time as something which should have been 'impossible' for a console.

That's because the arcade (naomi) was basically a Dreamcast with more memory.

That's a GBA game!? Holy guacamole, that could pass for a PS1/Saturn title.

Doom on the Atari Jaguar was pretty amazing for the time.

Vastly superior to Saturn, 3DO, 32X and Snes SFX versions and competing nicely with PS1 for frame rate and feel although not quite as many levels.

I know the Jaguar was described as a 64bit console but at its heart was a 13mhz 16bit 68000 and its GPU wasn't even 64bit it had 2 pretty weak 32bit GPU's (added together to make the 64bit claim if I remember rightly) and many games on Jaguar struggled to improve on Snes and Megadrives games. So a pretty decent version of Doom was quite surprising.

Yeah, aside from the unfortunate lack of music, the Jaguar port of Doom was a damn fine piece of work.

The SNES port is also noteworthy for being something of a technical miracle.

GBA was truly the king of weird ass ports that in theory shouldn't exist.

Like there's a god damn Tekken game for it.

Wing Commander on Amiga 500/600/2000 & SNES.

The snes port was weird though the way they always faced you, you could never approach from behind plus missing floor and ceiling textures. Got the job done though. I guess the snes wolfenstein port is more impressive in someways as it was achieved without a SFX chip. Here's the megadrive and snes versions of wolfenstein compared. The megadrive version is quite impressive but is unofficial and very recent and only features the shareware level I think.

I wasted a lot of time on the snes version many years ago.

Wolfenstein 3D was a lot less demanding on the hardware. It ran better on a 10 - 16 MHz 286 than Doom on a 386 DX40

Need for Speed Most Wanted on Vita deserves a mention I feel; it's remarkable how closely it replicates the full fat console versions

I have this game on Vita but have never been past the start menu because signing up for Origin is required ( which is unbelievably lame ) , and I cannot complete the registration. It just won't go through for some reason. It does look pretty though!

Nobody mentioned this?

No question but without the SFX 32bit risc dsp chip that doom used the Snes just had a 6502 based processor I think and its standard gpu. So a huge difference in power. I would say on face value what was achieved with wolfenstein on standard hardware was more impressive than doom with the SFX chip especially when you see the compromises they made to Doom to get it working, simplified engine, missing textures etc.
