When I lived in Europe (I won't say which nations, because it was not universal.), the racism was more overt and out in the open. I was shocked by that, because it was simply unexpected. That's not to say that I've been isolated from it, here in NY. In fact, when I was very young, we had to cut ties with some racist family friends. Later on, we had to do the same with family in TN. In both of those cases, we were initially unaware, until they were forced to interact with our black friends and family. My multinational friends have told me that the problem is heightened in Asia and eastern bloc Europe, likely due to cultural isolation.

All of this seems to indicate that penetrating those markets could very well present a real challenge. Even in the US, there is a seemingly incomprehensible 30% of the country that has abandoned all mores to support a man who contradicts everything they've espoused their entire lives. It's horrifying, because I am related to these people, and they offhandedly dismiss the clear contradictions. Having seen it, lived it, and heard more about it overseas, I can see people offhandedly dismissing the film, too.

There you go, labeling every Trump supporter a racists.

I never said that they were racist, just that Trump contradicts their mores.

Yet another superhero movie, yawn. Hollywood is devoid of fresh ideas.

Actually Black Panther is new.  I don't mind super hero movies I just don't want to see the same thing over and over again like the 3 spiderman reboots.

And its not just superhero movies.  Hollywood really has a problem with reboots.  But, that raises a good question:  Is Hollywood responding that way because of lack of creativity or because what it knows people will pay to go see.  I mean money rules the world.  I doubt we would get so many reboots if people stopped going to see them.   What do you think the problem is?

Here's my two cents:  Hollywood, like all businesses, follows the money, and right now the money is in proven profitable franchises like super hero movies.

Think about it.  What age bracket goes to the movies? Answer: teenagers & young adults.  So, Hollywood is catering to this crowd,  If it's superhero movies they want, then it's superhero movies they get.

I somewhat blame myself for the current situation.  When I was a teen, I saw Superman & Batman at the theatre.  I loved seeing those films with my friends.

Lastly, what really bugs me is think about how many actors have portrayed Batman.......How many have portrayed Superman........How many have portrayed Spiderman..etc.

In my opinion, Christopher Reeve was the best Superman; Christian Bale was the best Batman, and take your pick on the best Spidey.

If this is what BP can do, infinity war is gonna smash all records.

So does that mean the movie was pretty good? I'm interested in checking it out myself, and Marvel's been doing overall well with their movies lately.

I'm not sure there are enough screenings to do much better. You can only sell out so much.

The big question is how these movies hold in second and third weeks. Black Panther has almost no competition while Infinity War has some (assuming Deadpool and Star Wars don't flop).

Between Wonder Woman and Black Panther perhaps the view of minority and woman leads will be shattered.

Of course, as long as the public keeps supporting these movies Studios will continue making them.

This^^^

Let me tell you something, Disney, is laughing all the way to the bank.  They could give two shits about black and white.  They only see green and red lol.

Some records broken for Black Panther:

Most presale tickets for any superhero movie
Highest-rated superhero movie on rotten tomatoes
Best marvel imax ticket preseller
Best February Thursday night preview box office
Best non-team-up opening day
Best opening weekend in February history
Biggest opening weekend for African-american director
Biggest Monday box office of all time

I'm still surprised that people seem to focus on the US box office numbers only. I get it that it is the largest market, but usually the international box office surpass it easily. I can't understand this separation. If a movie makes 200M in the US + 150M international, is it better than a film doing 100M (US) + 700M (international)? Of course not, money is money, it doesn't matter from which country it is.

The only way to measure the success of a film is comparing the total worldwide box office.

Studios get more money from domestic box office; that said Black Panther will probably have a 50/50 split domestic and overseas and will pass 1Billion worldwide it still have China to come

Yes, I'm aware that in the US usually the studio keeps 50% of the revenue, while international markets normally hover around 40% (with China being an outlier, around 25%). Even with that in mind, it's necessary to include all the box office in such performance analyses, because films can have limited appeal outside of the US or the opposite. Titanic, second best BO of all time, had like 70% of his money from international audiences.

Anyway, I think your estimate is mostly on track. Black Panther is only lagging a bit internationally because it has not released in key markets yet. Its performance has being incredible.

The funny thing is that Black Panther was basically a C-level Marvel character. But Marvel has show that they can get characters that no one knows (Dr. Strange, Ant-man, Guardians of the Galaxy) and still get a huge box office. It's rare for the MCU to have a real bad film. Even their worst efforts like Iron Man 3 and Thor 2 are watchable. Since the quality is good, anything with Marvel on its name is guaranteed success at this point.
