Forums - Politics Discussion - School Shooting in South Florida

This is getting ridiculous. I'm for people owning guns and all but there must be stricter qualifications to get a gun. And the father or mother of the shooter should have made it harder for their son to obtain the gun. My prayers are out to those affected.

no one. Tragedy happens and both left and right in he political parties politicize it and then once that narrative runs out for both sides, they move on to the next big thing. Same thing will happen here. Left will cry for gun control and the right will say ''nah shush it'' and then we move on.

Many socialists support guns rights, it's the centrists that generally support gun control.

Cant say I agree with this statement. Either way what I said stands true. We really need to focus on the mental health of some of these individuals. This kid that did the shooting, they've been interviewing students and they said they KNEW this was going to happen because he was bullied. A lot of these events are preventable and usually all signs are there that something is going to happen, but everyone turns a blind eye

I agree, but more than the mental health, we need to understand why his mental health was bad, and the larger reasons for how a society produces people like this.

atleast 15 dead as of now...will most likely increase soon :(

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)

While I, like most people, support improving our systems for helping people who have a mental illness, there is little in the way of evidence that addressing the mental health issues in America will play a strong part in reducing the overall rate of violence and gun violence in this country. In fact, blaming incidents like this on mental illness can actually do increased harm, by further stigmatizing mental illness and driving people away from seeking out help. Also, as a solution, it typically stays in the nebulous "do something" region which allows people to sound well-meaning for a few days until the people move on, effectively scapegoating the problem onto mental illness while accomplishing virtually nothing.

I'm not trying to downplay this, only qualify the statement of "18" because I think some people may be getting the wrong idea.

You might take that 18 figure with a grain of salt:

Everytown uses a straightforward, fair, and comprehensive definition for a school shooting: any time a firearm discharges a live round inside a school building or on a school campus or grounds, as documented by the press and, when necessary, confirmed through further inquiries with law enforcement or school officials. Incidents in which guns were brought into schools but not discharged, or where the firearm was discharged off school grounds, are not included. The database is updated as new shootings occur or as new evidence emerges about prior incidents.

7 school shootings where people were shot (including this one) in a month and a half is still insane.

Edit:The 8 shootings where no one was hurt (accidental fire or missing the target) in a month and a half is also insane.
