Forums - Gaming Discussion - Report: Disney unhappy with EA, considering dropping the Star Wars exclusivity deal early, Activision/Ubisoft have been contacted already

Allowing any capable studio with a good idea to try their hand at the franchise under a certain amount of supervision and subject to an ongoing approval process would be ideal.

Maybe you should actually read the OP

Ok, so they are dropping the exclusivity, not EA. Fair enough. My point still stands though. Why do they think Activision or Ubisoft will handle it any better?

Because 3 major publishers can crank out big hits faster than 1.

They don't have that many options. Warner Brothers is their main competitor and they won't go wih it; Bethesda doesnt produce that many games per year, so  they wouldn't be satisfied with their ouput; Take 2 the same (and besides, they own GTA, and I'm sure Disney doesn't want to see the "Disney partners with GTA maker to make Star Wars games" on the press); Microsoft is too big and they have their own ecosystem to take care of, and the same with Sony and Nintendo. And most japanese games are not that big to make the big projects Disney wants. Maybe Square Enix would be ideal, they already make Kingdom Hearts and that Marvel project. Still, it's better if there's no monopoly of the license.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

So what exactly is the problem? Are they not happy with the sales or with the amount of backlash from the fans?

They have a lot of options. Many developers would kill to work on a Star Wars game. Don't see why it has to be big AAA games only.

Tbh considering how they handled Mario + Rabbids I'd take Ubisoft over Activision, it's just a matter of wether Ubisoft has the development teams that are needed to make games with Disney's IPs

I agree, but Disney wants as many games with the Star Wars name attached to them as possible. And if they want to make exclusivity deals with them, they have to think of the biggest publishers around. I guess that, after what happened, they realised exclusivities aren't good for a series as big as SW, not to mention they probably hate EA with a vengeance now: only two big games and a couple mobile spinofs in five years, massive controversy surrounding th license right when a SW movie is on cinemas, being accused of allowing child gambling...

The fuck? Is Disney run by morons? They see how bad big AAA publishers are and their answer is to run to the next two biggest ones? What the fuck are they expecting?

I have a feeling Disney execs don't know much about the gaming industry.

Just make it available to everyone. Its not like Activison or Ubisoft couldn't get it as well as many others.
