Forums - Gaming Discussion - GPU prices more than double as cryptocurrency craze accelerates

I wanted a 1060 6gb and sell my 970, no chance now the 1060 is almost £400 not a good time to be looking into pc gaming imo.

Yep that is almost double what I paid for my 1060 6gb a little over a year or so ago.  I think I paid about 299 US dollars.

Several GTX1060 6 GB (i wouldn't recommend less in 2018) available for €290 - €320 (that's £250 - £280) right now, all in stock:

If this continues this will pretty much kill PC gaming

I doubt that.

Already 50 - 60% of the Steam users (140 - 170 million PCs) have hardware that matches or exceeds the performance of a PS4... they should be able to play any 8th gen multiplatform game in decent settings.

20 - 25% of the Steam users (50 - 70 million PCs) already have hardware that matches or exceeds the performance of a PS4 Pro.

I meant going foward, but ye, guess you are right.

Yeah I heard about this though I did not care to check out the details. I'm not sure how cryptocurrencies have anything to do with GPU prices and why specifically GPU prices. The milk I buy at the store still costs the same, books I buy still cost the same but GPU's specifically had their prices skyrocket because of the totally unrelated cryptocurrencies, makes no sense to me.

I can only hope this will not affect the price of the future PS5 but who knows right?

Is this good thing for GPU maker ?

GPUs were used to mine crypto.
GPUs were like a pickaxe of something.

The pricing issues have more or less been resolved.

That still makes no sense.

Keyboards are used to mine bitcoins, office spaces are used to mine bitcoins, computer screens are used to mine bitcoins...

But you don't see those skyrocketing BECAUSE of bitcoins.

How is the way you use your GPU's even remotely connected to the actual price of the hardware? What people does with the hardware they buy is their business, how is it that from that specific use of GPU's, GPU's manufacturers are like: Oh we heard that you guys are not playing video games with your GPU's, you are mining bitcoins so for no reason LET'S RISE PRICES!

Because instead of buying 1 GPU (or 2-4 for a few crazy enthusiasts), miners were buying 16+ at a time. Supply dropped and demand rose.

its nice to see some relief locally. The prices haven’t bottomed out just yet, but the secondhand market is being flooded with ex-mining GPUs.

Not entirely. And not world wide.
The RX 580 is still 50% more expensive than what I paid for mine in Aus.
Supply may have started to catch up, but prices still suck the proverbial.

Good for these people that will sunk a lot of money to lose some money.
