Forums - Gaming Discussion - GPU prices more than double as cryptocurrency craze accelerates

"One AMD card's street price has tripled to $1,500 but pre-built system vendors unable to match price

GameSpot reports that as awareness spreads of how high-end gaming GPUs can be used to mine digital currencies such as Bitcoin, sales are driving prices double, sometimes triple the retail price.

In a comparison chart, the site shows that cards such as the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti - Nvidia's flagship among its range of gaming GPUs - is currently being sold online for $1,350 - more than twice the MSRP of $700.

AMD has also been affected, with the Radeon RX Vega 64 tripling in value from $500 to $1,500. The site also reports many of these cards are sold out at most retailers."

Another good article comparing MSRP to the street price of various pieces of hardware.

As cryptos grow in populatiry and value, they will demand more and more miners, so expect the prices of hardware and electricity go up on the next years.

I'm kicking myself for not buying 1060 a year ago, but my 960 is still a beast

They need to start making dedicated cards for mining only. This way it wont effect gamers.

CPU: Ryzen 7950X
GPU: MSI 4090 SUPRIM X 24G
Motherboard: MSI MEG X670E GODLIKE
RAM: CORSAIR DOMINATOR PLATINUM 32GB DDR5
SSD: Kingston FURY Renegade 4TB
Gaming Console: PLAYSTATION 5

I wonder if all that mining is representing a significant blip on energy usage by now.

Uhh that doesn't look good

I can't wait to see the bubble pop, and all those who invested into the mining process losing it all.

Good thing I bought my 1080ti when I did, as well as still having my GTX 980/680 cards too.

They already have, it's just that miners are a very greedy bunch and they'll snap up anything and everything.

Currently there is no law in place to stop retailers from selling to miners more than general consumers. Nvidia has asked some retailers to stop, but in all honesty, why would they stop?, they are the ones making a killing from it, as well asNvidia/AMD.
