Forums - Gaming Discussion - Gears for Breakfast: "A Hat in Time is not coming to the Switch"

There's many possible reasons which could have led them to decide a Switch port will never happen and I'm sure in the end it makes perfect sense for their business. What doesn't make sense is not providing any of those reasons.

By stating why they can't/won't port the game they would have stopped a lot of those annoying follow up tweets like "UR so dum, tis is perfect game for Switch".

However, this behavior from the studio is not good.

Why? for answering a question bluntly?

The tone portrayed by the person running the Twitter is passive-aggressive and unbecoming of a professional. This is the kind of petty behavior you'd expect from a dev's Twitter, but not the official Twitter account. A lot of people don't care. Some even applaud them. But, if you alienate anyone because of that, that's a potential sale you may never get back. Do that too many times, and your business will suffer.

It's an indie developer, why are you expecting corporate professionalism?

Also, if it's alienating anyone, it's Switch owners, and if they're really not bringing the game to Switch, what sales are they losing?

A Hat in Time is not on mobile and no one would buy it for € 30.

I resort to that argument because it's reality. These kind of games sell far better on Switch than on other platforms. Numerous indie developers have already confirmed this. Steamworld Dig 2 already sold over 500K on Switch alone, that's insane for a game like that! Celeste also sold best on Switch.

Mobile is a platform that is floated with many developers, only a few are able to succeed. Why would you even compare it to the Switch revenue-wise? The type of games that succeed on mobile are also very different to console games.

Not talking about the game being on mobile, I am in fact talking about that mobile makes more than the Switch does, and even all 3 consoles and PC combined.

Those kind of games also sell on other platforms, and even before the Switch hit the scene, they sold across all 4 platforms rather well. You play off one system as if it's a juggernaut that could outright slaughter all 3 platforms (going by the way you talk highly and how it deserves more than the others), yet that is far from reality in terms of console sales, subscription earnings and general popularity. A small indie game, smaller than a AAA game, smaller than PuB has made a bit more money on a single platform?, good for them, but it's not on the same level if not more than what a AAA game makes, or even what an indie game like Minecraft has made.

We can talk highly about how Switch sells some games better than other platforms, but don't forget that other platforms have plenty more games that sell well on those platforms than Switch.

See I'm finding this "it's a different account, so the difference matters in all the world" argument to being bogus. Kamiya acted like a totally unprofessional for his stature. Yes he was using a different account, but what the defenders seem to wilfully ignore (Very much so) is that Kamiya is the same person, personal account or company. He still represents himself as a person that has or does belong to a company/project, even if said project was finished years ago.

The way these devs acted was proven thanks to a boiling point that was reached, another issue that some people fail to notice. "but they could have just explained and then we wouldn't have been asking all the time", wouldn't it have been just as better to not spam all day and night on their Twitter feed?. Why on gods earth has it got to be a one way street with a particular userbase?.

I'm only now noticing this when it comes to the Ninty userbase, but I honestly fail to see why Kamiya is justified, yet these devs are not and how it's 10x worse doing wrong to the Ninty userbase than it is for others.

The explanation is most likely "We don't want to". Which if vocalised probably wouldn't stop the tweets.

"Development for the game started in August 2012 and was planned for a Q2 2013 release but has been significantly delayed. At the start of development, Kaerlev was the sole developer of the game but over time the development grew into Gears for Breakfast, a team spanning four countries and entirely volunteer-based."

It's a very small developer so they have no obligations to publishers or the like, they can just do what they want to do, and with development of the game starting almost six years ago they probably just want to work on something else.

Don't see any issue with these tweets.

It's ok, as with Bayoneta

I am 100% with the Hat of time people. That wasn't even being rude. That is just being tired.
It seem various "fans" are taking port begging to the extreme.

If they want to release it, they will. I can't even imagine the constant harassment and such from entitle people demanding things like that.

Good for them.

The funny thing is the stereotypical response might end up begging the good ol' "We already have Odyssey, why would we want your stupid game!" That was the response for Yooka Laylee by the time it ended up coming out ...

I don't think there's anything wrong with "port begging", it just gets annoying when repeated. The point about having no obligation is really quite funny yet sad. We don't need to ask a dev every day. Besides, let's be honest, we all know this is coming to Switch eventually. It will be financially stupid not to port it. I just don't think it's happening in the near(10+ months) future.

Yooka Laylee already had a bad rep as being a disappointment in and of itself on other platforms well before it released on Switch.

also why the big deal? they are indie..They probably don't have the resources to build a switch version and probably are just focusing on their next game
