Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Which Switch Titles Can Become The Best Selling Titles In Their Franchises As Well? (Updated)

Time to give this a bump after the recent financial results, BOTW has become the best selling Zelda title no doubt at this point Odyssey has done the same for 3D Mario platformers being at over 10m at the end of March and XBC2 which already was the best selling Xenoblade game has moved up to 1.3m which according to this site is the same sales as games like Persona 5 at retail.

Given the recent results have people's outlook changed?

Nope still same.

Pokemon - No

Animal Crossing/Metroid - Likely

Pokemon no, 32 million is insane. Animal crossing yes. Metroid yes if it is as good as the previous games.

Pokémon won't. None of the mainline games have ever been limited by installed base nor have graphical improvements ever proved to increase sales. It's also a series that values consistency and refinement over bold new directions, and none of the mainline games have had disappointing sales, so there's no motivation for drastic changes.

Animal Crossing has a realistic chance. Wild World and New Leaf sold similar numbers, so a sequel with more possibilities can grow the IP further.

Metroid Prime 4 has the lowest hurdle to clear, but I am completely uncertain about its chances. What is known is that Retro Studios isn't the developer of the game, so it's likely that development will be Japan-based in which case Yoshio Sakamoto will have his hands in it. That guy's idea of what Metroid is supposed to be put the IP on hold for a good while. It was also him who declared Metroid Prime as a spinoff series. Fans of the IP obviously disagree and this shows how big the disconnect is. The original Metroid Prime launched at the same time as Metroid Fusion a.k.a. Metroid 4 a.k.a. Sakamoto's take, and Prime won the sales battle handily. Sakamoto has a reason to hold a grudge against Metroid Prime, so part 4 could be his attempt to fix what Retro broke.

Long story short: Metroid Prime 4 could be another Metroid: Other M.

I wasn't a fan of Samus Returns either, so I have no confidence in Metroid Prime 4 restoring the IP to its former glory when I haven't seen anything of the game yet.

Yoshio Sakamoto isn't involved with the Prime series - Kensuke Tanabe is in charge of that series and will remain in charge for Prime 4.

Decent time to revisit and re-purpose this thread I've updated the title to include all possible games now with Smash being the closest upcoming title so people can add their predictions on those, after the performance of the Switch and it's software this year I want to know if people still hold their initial views.

Me personally I can now see both Animal Crossing and MP4 joining the list while Pokemon is still tricky based on the sheer numbers Red/Blue moved. Smash will join the list imo and I can possibly see Fire Emblem Three Houses edging it's way into the list, I think Mario Tennis Aces will get there as well as it's not far off the original N64 game.

Yes to everything except Pokémon.

Possible to Pokemon, definitely for Animal Crossing, maybe for Metroid.

Pokemon 2019 will sell 20m at least if it's a regular mainline game; depending on how good they make it, it could sell 25-30m+. The hunger is definitely there, but they need to make something that actually appeals to the people who will be buying it, not a super toddler-focused game.

AC will sell 15-20m+. It's an incredibly popular franchise that has only gotten more popular in the 6+ years (by the time the next one releases) since New Leaf. You'd have to be crazy to bet against it.

Metroid, I really don't know. It's fanbase are super vocal on the internet, but they don't turn up to support the games when they come. Samus Returns did terribly. If they market it well and/or add an attractive multiplayer aspect, I can see it selling 3m+, but if they don't I think it'll struggle to break 2m.

I think there's going to be a lot of money and ambition behind Prime 4. I definitely think Nintendo are really going to push for it to be much bigger than any previous Metroid title.

I wouldn't be surprised if there is a big online multiplayer focus with it too, maybe they want their own Halo to really start selling them subscriptions.
