Forums - Gaming Discussion - Pokémon HGSS do not hold up.*Rant*

I beat Red on Heartgold, and consider it one on my biggest gaming achievements. Not because of the challenge of course, but because how much patience it required to do it. Grinding is normally the bane of my existence, so I don’t know how I managed to keep my interest up the whole time. I remember it taking like an hour per team level-ups (6 level-ups total), which meant I was putting a huge amount of time just re-fighting the same people or walking around the same area. Basically...not having fun. I remember reading manga or watching TV while doing it in order to keep myself from going crazy, but that doesn’t strike much confidence in a system when you feel like you need to multi-task.

Still, despite how slow it was, I really enjoyed it, which is probably why I pushed myself through the slog. Not sure I can explain it well, but the Japanese theme and connections to Red/Blue were cool. I miss the slot machines though.

True, I've been catching up on vanguard while playing through this, helps a bit

Try playing Diamond and Pearl if you think HGSS are slow, haha.

Ikr? I thought it was funny that he said Gen 4 was enjoyable, but the battle animations in D/P are painfully slow as well XD

On the same note, I'm playing Liquid Crystal right now. It's pretty amazing for a GBA rom hack. Try it sometime!

I was just replaying Soul Silver months ago and I had more fun playing it than the recent Pokemon games. Only thing I hated is the terrible leveling in the game. It did feel more challenging, but I prefer the length of HGSS compared to the recent ones. Still my favorite Pokemon game.

I said it was enjoyable in spite of, it just seems that this frustrates me more now than when I first played it, I still enjoy the games, just pointing out how frustrating it ks, coming to DP theirth definitely worse, Ive never finished them, but have never tried again either, so I can only comment on platinum and HGSS

I guess I've just always been the opposite. Diamond and Pearl were okay.. but I don't find myself coming back to them due to the battle animations and just due to my general lukewarm feelings on them when they were new. HG/SS on the other hand, I could stomach the battle animations because i had such fond memories of Gen 2. Even that fondness isn't enough anymore though, if I feel like playing Gen 2 again I usually just play Gold/Silver/Crystal rather than the remakes.

Pokemon as a franchise does not hold up. *Rant*
: P

HGSS being slow is a valid complaint, but saying it doesn't hold up just because of that isn't right. They are some of the best crafted games in the series and it shows how downhill GameFreak has gone recently when comparing the DS games to the 3DS ones.

I'm currently replaying Yellow, and although there are some frustrations in design now, it's still holds up imo. I'm going to assume SS holds up even better.
