Forums - Gaming Discussion - Pokémon HGSS do not hold up.*Rant*

While gen 4 Pokémon games(DP/Pt/HGSS) aren't my favourite in the series, I still enjoyed them when I first played through them, which was around 9 years ago.

Recently just before restarting Y(save file glitched out) ,I thought I'd Replay the entire series again since it's been a few years since I'd played firered , platinum.

Since these were my least favourite I came to them last, and holy shit are these games slow as hell, I mean it'rather start soft resetting for a shiny in BW, that'd take lesser time than finishing a battle in these games.

Somehow after finishing platinum, I thought maybe HGSS would be better, but even my nostalgia goggles weren't enough to let this slide, given the high encounter rate and the absurd level curve, the frikkin slow battle animations, I actually ended up finishing a season of The big bang theory before I finished the 5th gym.

Also who thought it was a good idea to lock evolutionary stones for later generations to the pokeathlon? I'm fine with the stones available only post game since it helps gen 2 Pokémon shine more but even after that, evolving a togetic is unnecessarily complicated.

The only thing that seems to hold up are the pokemon walking behind you and the music,

No offense to people who love these games ,i  love them too, but replaying them feels more like work than fun, especially after something as fast as black and white.

P.S. Ignore the typos if any, typed on a phone with a broken screen.

If you're annoyed by battle animations taking too long why not just turn them off?

I have, it's more the walking speed, battle speed that bother me, though knowing myself I'll ignore all this and replay them again in a few years anyway :p

I beat Red on Heartgold, and consider it one on my biggest gaming achievements. Not because of the challenge of course, but because how much patience it required to do it. Grinding is normally the bane of my existence, so I don’t know how I managed to keep my interest up the whole time. I remember it taking like an hour per team level-ups (6 level-ups total), which meant I was putting a huge amount of time just re-fighting the same people or walking around the same area. Basically...not having fun. I remember reading manga or watching TV while doing it in order to keep myself from going crazy, but that doesn’t strike much confidence in a system when you feel like you need to multi-task.

Still, despite how slow it was, I really enjoyed it, which is probably why I pushed myself through the slog. Not sure I can explain it well, but the Japanese theme and connections to Red/Blue were cool. I miss the slot machines though.

Try playing Diamond and Pearl if you think HGSS are slow, haha.

I sort of agree. Although HGSS is one of my favorite games, it's definitely on the boring side.

The running seems a bit floaty and slow, but I feel the original RBY games were the slowest because of a lot of lacking features. Though they are the first pokemon games ever, so it does make sense it would be lacking..

[3DS] Winter Playtimes [Wii U]

I've found this as well when I've gone back to play the old Gen 4 games, although I don't remember Gen 3 having this issue.

I try to judgetbthe games based on my first play through so Pearl still remains ine of my favourites but I agree the battles in particular move at a snails pace.

I am going to have to disagree. I played Soul Silver last year and I found it just as fun as I did back then. I must've beaten them at least 3 or 4 times. I beaten gold about 3 times as well when I was younger. I still think it is the best in the series and I played nearly all of them!

People say that it has slow battle animation but it doesn't really bother me. People say you have to grind a lot but I am used to grinding a lot anyway. I love Final Fantasy 1 and all you do in that game is grind. I also always got around the evolutionary stones by just trading my stones around.

(killeryoshis note - Who put that there ?)
Switch is 9th generation. Everyone else is playing on last gen systems! UPDATE: This is no longer true

Can't trade now can I? :( I guess I can't blame them for this,i never said I didn't enjoy the games but coming back to it this time (4th time), I could finally see how slow it was, I'd be ok with it too,and then I was mee with the worst thing about old games, HMs *insert damn you meme here*
