Yes, it is actually. Currently 32GB GDDR6 is not possible without a very expensive 512bit bus.

Of course if you want 16GB or 24GB, it won't be a problem, but even 24GB isn't enough IMO. The best would be 32GB games + 4 or 8GB OS: 36GB or 40GB in total.

Most PC's today are 8-16 GB right? and most users dont need more.

Why would a console need 32GB at this point? that would just needlessly drive up prices wouldnt it?

I think 24 GB for next gen should be more than enough.

Maybe you are right...24GB could be enough but only if all that memory (until the last bit lol) is reserved for games. 8GB DDR4 will be needed for OS.

Ok the way I worded my post, it should've been clear, but let me say it again: PS3 lasting 7 years proves my point, because that was also prolonged by the recession, like the Xbox 360 was.

PS2 peaking doesn't mean shit when you take a look at its 2006-2007-2008 numbers. New games were coming out regularly, even games that weren't on the PS3 (gow2, persona 4, etc)It was obvious that ps2 had a ton of life left in it, And easily could've been dragged on for an addition two years.

Recession was irrelevant to game industry performance, both 360 and PS3 still kept growing in hardware shipments until 2011 ...

The only "life" PS2 had left were in developing countries ...

2019 seems to early for me, especially when you consider the following 3 things:

A) how well its selling.

B) How many exclusives are still to be released, we already have some games for 2019 (not counting what hasnt been anounced this year and next)

C) The fact that the PS3 lasted 7 years while not being even close as profitable as PS4, so why shouldnt the PS4 last at least as long as that?...

2020 seems like the best answer so im not surprised is winning by a lot in the poll.

I'ld love if it lasts until 2021, but I think it's probably happening in 2020.
Due to strong PS4 sales, the currently developing software, and 4K TV disponibility, it's not gonna happen before 2020. So you have plenty of time to try the amazing games availible on the PS4 until next console releases.

Anyone know any insiders and have a clue?

I skipped out on the ps4 this gen and i'm curious when ps5 will come out?

ps4 came out in 2013. So its 5 years old. Time for the PS5?

Unless you know for a fact that the PS5 will be backwards compatible with the PS4 games, you missing out on one hell of a console.

+1 !!!

Emm no. Wrong.

Good gamer´s  PCs nowadays have 16 GB of main memory and 8 GB of graphic card dedicated memory. And we are speaking at the mid high end, like a Geforce GTX 1070. Geforce 1080 ti has even more.

So 24 GB of memory would be enough for games like the ones we play now at 4k High-ultra quality. But games get larger and better and I would love to see 32 GB on a PS5. Anyway, XBox one X has 12, so I guess we should be happy if we get more than 16 on PS5. That would be the min for me to be happy. 32 would be awesome, hehehe.

The switch might have SOME impact if it starts stealing otherwise ps4 exclusive games because of its japanese dominance. Switch is on track to match ps4 in japan by march 2019 (pokemon WILL make this a thing) so that is a factor.

It SHOULD be 2018 imo because after five years, consoles get boring and stale for me. I own all three and I've owned the PS4 since it launched. It was a good console but, yeah... there's no buzz anymore. Its games aren't achieving graphical or technical advances anymore... its done.

I'd be interested in a PS5 if it was announced for this fall but there's no way Sony would do that because, money. I'll probably just finish up my backlog of current generation games, put the console away when I'm done and wait to see what they do with their 9th generation console.

Going by history, backwards compatibility is not a primary prerogative of Sony's. And going by current trends of PS4 sales, why would Sony want to butcher PS4 hardware sales by allowing backwards compatibility with the PS5?

The last gens the architecture changed heavily from generation to generation. Next gen will most likely also see an X86 based system, which imho makes BC very likely.

Sony can easily miss out on hardware sales for PS4 if it benefits the PS5. The sooner they start building their future the better. It could even benefit PS4 sales late in the cycle, if people would know all their games would also work on the next new system.

I can’t imagine they’d leave the field of BC to MS, when the main reason for no BC on PS4, the Cell’s difficult architecture, is not a thing anymore.

yup backward compatible will be there, and to add one more reason is that many people in this gen have moved on and built up a digital library which they cannot sell, also I wont be surprise if sony went ahead and emulated PS3 as well.
