Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Doom will finally get a new patch on Switch this month

Nice.  You know, for all the compromises, Doom is dang impressive relative to the hardware, especially in handheld mode.  And especially when you consider it was brought over by a porting studio and not built for the Switch by id themselves.

Yeah, running on a 0.5 TF FP32 handheld is great. Almost looks like the PC version on lowest settings. Needs a dedicated GPU though. I played the first 2 levels on an Intel iGPU at 1080p @ 20-25 FPS. Well optimized game. The only thing that disappoints on the Switch is that performance took a huge hit and it's priced as a new game. I got it for $20 CAD on Steam. At retail it's like $80 + 12% tax in Canada. Switch Carts are expensive though, like $20 per cart after manufacturing and licensing.

Currently (Re-)Playing: Starcraft 2: Legacy of the Void Multiplayer, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

Currently Watching: The Shield, Stein's;Gate, Narcos

Uh, Switch carts ain't that expensive.  The 16GB one is a mild increase in costs.  8GB is the same as a PS4 disc.  But this is based on information from a year ago, costs may have dipped a bit.

A 50 GB BDR is $12 after mfg and licensing last I checked. IIRC, that hasn't changed. 16GB and 32GB carts haven't gone down AFAIK. The last time I checked GAF and ResetEra, these are the prices developers have said they've been paying, and to the best of my knowledge and ability to search, this is still accurate. Nintendo is solely responsible for manufacturing and distributing carts. Prices won't come down until 64GB carts are available.

Doom apparently cos quite a significant res boost from the latest patch: (View in full screen)

Before:

After:

DOOM : G.L.A.S.S.E.S. EDITION!

(ok, I promise i'll never mention this again ..... ever)

Now it looks way more like a 7.5th gen game then a PS3 game

While its resolution and textures were PS3-ish, the fact its effects work was taken almost intact from the PS4 always prevented it from ever looking like a PS3 game to me.

Digital Doundry have analysed the patch: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2018-does-the-new-doom-switch-patch-boost-performance

To sum up, it now tends to stay above 25fps in the most demanding scenes where it used to dip to 20fps, and it holds closer to 720p during these same scenes.

Excellent to hear. Awesome game, kudos to Bethesda/Panic Button for this!

What I love most about this patch is the icon change. I love the box art and was really disappointed it wasn't on my home menu.
