On VGC, while logged into your account?

See my wall for details. I do not want "them" finding out.

"Them"? How will it be resolved if they don't know about it?

Xen's comment on Axiom Verge was so bad that it broke the site.

Well I hear the PS4 gamers want to play quality games... like The Order and Knack! Those graphics are shiny and hold my attention for long periods of time in between eating and sleeping.

I would have replied to that comment earlier but find it incredibly hard to type while holding my face with both hands.

Any links? Links help me... :)

Sorry Talon, couldn't really provide a link to a page reloading on click, I could indeed screen shot the next time I get the "empty comment" bug I've been seeing over the last few days, the reloading comments seems to be sorted now, it could well be a browser issue on my side, over the past 2-3 days my Firefox has been the tool used to download almost every GC game lol.

This is kind of off topic but do any of you know if there's a way to add multiple games without manually clicking through each one and adding it? If there is a way to add them the search function that would be really good but if not I guess I'll eventually get my entire list of games it'll just take longer.

Nope! You have to do it one by one. It sucks but the admins are working on it.

(killeryoshis note - Who put that there ?)
Switch is 9th generation. Everyone else is playing on last gen systems! UPDATE: This is no longer true

The problem is that comments can be down voted for no reason at all. If you hate someone and are as immature as a five year old child with a vendetta, you can down vote for no other reason except said vendetta. This makes it impossible to say anything except positive, ass kissing remarks for whatever the article is talking about. Either you do that, or... bye bye... down voted into elementary school purgatory.

Voting should be allowed but should not have any affect on the comment. It should not raise, lower or god forbid, make it disappear entirely. And for the love of all that is logical, take away the ability for people to self-vote.

So - technical issues aside (which I know is the point of this thread, but for which I'm unable to look at or comment on at the moment), this is more of a philosophical issue which I can talk about...

...and I see your viewpoint and agree.

BUT...

...I can also see the voting/hiding being an affective tool for dealing with intentionally juvenile comments with the sole purpose of instigating and annoying. Sure, moderators should (and do) deal with these types of issues all the time, but the voting is just another tool which allows the community to self-moderate.

I don't know - really tough choice as I see benefits on both sides of the argument. :(

The problem with self-moderation is... SELF-moderation. By that, I mean being able to look at yourself in the mirror before pushing down-vote and thinking about why you're doing it. Most people are not using it to moderate for the greater good. It's being used for a much less scrupulous reason and it makes the comments section fan service... or even something worse.

I'd much rather see moderators apply the same rules that apply in the main forums and take care of the problems that way. At least we'd have proper discourse.

Some brief VGC history:

The thumb down feature was put in to allow the community to self-moderate spambots and blatant troll comments, but that was before a report button was implemented on the comments section of articles.

Self-moderation isn't necessary when it's easy to report issues to the mod team, so the thumb down functionality could be removed while thumb ups would still be allowed. In order to appease people who still see issues with fanboy voting, you could allow registered users to sort comments either by most liked or by oldest/latest. So three options that would be saved to profiles just like the filters for the game database.

I also don't mind keeping both the thumbs up & down ability, but strip out (or make it a user option) to "hide" posts based on ratings or whatnot. Most WordPress articles have a thumbs up & down - but they don't always implement logic to do anything with that rating...   ...so anyway, that's another option for dealing with this.

what could also work is users who constantly post nothing but trolling rubbish comments could learn why their comments are getting downvoted into oblivion.

Everyone is free to say what they want... but that doesn't mean people have to listen to absolute mouthfuls of garbage, and once 5 or more have suffered reading a trolling comment and downvoted it I'm happy with that comment wasting less peoples time in the world.

I was going to go find examples of downvoted comments to display such wastes of time but find that comments sections for me now look like this

which is nice!

ps4 vs wii gap chart comment, does this need explanation as to why it's downvoted and then his reply post shows that the user doesn't understand why it's happened and thinks people are out to get him... rather than actually stopping for a moment and considering why people done it to his comment... or even read the reasons posted under it. Don't remove the ability to downvote this sort of trash out of peoples view, you don't want this on the articles.

Edit - Comment on the article about Take-Two president being impressed with Switch sales so far, again same logic, this person needs to stop and think why their comment gets these votes rather than offering them a soapbox but taking away the ability to stand on it and say things like this.

on an article on PUBG

PUBG screenshot for anyone who thinks the downvotes are to pick on the poster and not the comment

Unless there is contrary examples of posts voted down that much without an obvious reason then the "my posts are picked on" rubbish doesn't work, some of my joke comments get picked up the wrong way and get red thumbed a fair bit, some of my legit feelings ones get downthumbed too like on Dead rising devs being laid off, but I understand that a comment which suggests they are the masters of their own destiny can be downvoted as it is being the devils advocate and pointing out one of the reasons someone lost their job (it's obviously more complex than this, but I understand people wanting to downvote a user commenting "that's life" on a firing post.
