Forums - PC Discussion - Microsoft ditches Windows 10 S in favour of a new S Mode

Shitstorm incoming if Steam can't even be installed by default. Also, this is really bad for consumers. It will slowly shift the focus from traditional software to UWP apps (because no on wants their app to require switching a setting before it can even be installed) and essentially give Microsoft monopoly in distributing Windows software (UWP apps can't, by default, installed from outside Microsoft Store, and that's probably never going to change).

It’s completely wrong since creators update I suppose. If a developer wants, he can pack his UWP app into .appx bundle and distribute it everywhere (almost). The user can download this file and install it with double click just like the normal win32 app but without going through installers.

Hmm, I think you might be right. I  completely forgot about that. That said, this misconception is almost entirely Microsoft's own fault: They originally had a bad default setting, and they never highlighted the change, I think. It was pretty bad communication from them.

If this remains true MS sure has found another way to shoot themselves in the foot.

I’ll go back to a cracked Win OS if true.

I don't see the problem with this for someone who buys say a Surface Laptop with S as the default. I only see an issue for someone with Pro S.

But this is clearly just to promote Windows Store adoption in order to make the whole thing better. There's nothing wrong with that, and I'd love a viable third option to Google and Apple.

Only problem is MS likes to shit on their customers by abandoning their consumer products, so...yeah. I forget my point.

This sounds to me like M$ preying on those that are not tech savvy enough to get themselves out of S Mode.  Not familiar enough with PC's? Welcome to our store and our store only sucker.

Edit:  Also if you want to promote the Windows Store make it less of a pain in the ass.

What would such a non-tech-saavy person be looking to install that they couldn't use the Store for, though? If they're not tech-saavy, what do they need?

Also, the Windows Store is constantly being updated. I think they're trying to make it less of a pain in the ass, cause they know it sucks.

I have no idea what the op is saying, guess I'm too old to understand this techie speak. I've never heard of windows 10 S. Still using 8.1 and pretty much only Firefox, Paint shop pro 4.12 (1997) and Total commander 6.03a (2004) next to Steam. Oh and Notepad and Calc, I guess that's MS software.

I've tried to use the windows store a few years ago, didn't work. Trial version of project spark simply would not download. Last time I opened the store.

Kind of about time. They should have dropped all Win32 with Windows 10.

But forcing the MS store? Isn't it kind of too late for that?

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

Top 50 'most fun' game list coming soon!

Tell me a funny joke!

How about a free DVD player or codecs since those no longer come with windows.

Right, but you said someone who isn't tech-savvy. You have to be pretty tech-savvy to hunt down codecs. I'd assume that if you're tech savvy enough to know about codecs, you can update your computer out of S

There are very few people I know that will never need to go outside of the Windows Store for software on their PC.

Are you new to pc gaming or something?
