Issues I've been having while doing my personal GOTY

Forums - Gaming Discussion - Issues I've been having while doing my personal GOTY

I typically do a top 10 for my favorite games each year, just for fun. But I've run into two problems while doing this and wanted see what you guys and girls thought. First off games released on a platform one year then get released somewhere else a year or so later. For example Owlboy, released originally in 2016 on PC but is getting a console release this year. My thoughts have been it can only count in the original release year. Second thing, episodic games. The reason I bring this up is Batman: Season Two. The first three episodes released in 2017 and the last two in 2018. So which year does that fall into when considering GOTY or a top __ list. I think it would fall into 2018 since the last episode release this year. I know how some gaming sites handle things like this but their lists are more serious and definitive. This is just for fun and just wanted to hear what others thought of this.

If it's your personal GOTY then just do whatever feels right.

Although for me I'd only count games in their original release year, regardless of ports/remasters/remakes or whatever else that releases later on. For episodic games... hmm, well I'm not really into the episodic format, I'm not patient and the chances I'd go back for another episode months after finishing the last one are pretty much 0%, so I only ever buy them when all episodes have been released, in which case it makes more sense to me to count it in the year the final complete version is available.

Bet Shiken that COD would outsell Battlefield in 2018. http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/post.php?id=8749702

Thanks for the input.

For me personally I'd count both the year and the platform a game came out. Using your own example with Owlboy, the game came out in 2016 on PC, but I haven't played it and if I were to play it for the first time on Switch then I'd count it as a 2018 game to me since that's when the game released on the platform I played. Same thing if Crash Bandicoot were to be ported to other consoles since I don't own a PS4, it'd be essentially a new game to me. Of course, if I played Owlboy this year on PC instead, it'd have to belong in my 2016 list (If I had one).

As for episodic games it just makes sense to use the release date of the final episode, since that's when the game was technically completed.

Edit: I hope my english is understandable enough, it's late where I live and I'm sleepy so I could have made some mistakes or explained things poorly =P
