Forums - Sales Discussion - MHW sells 1.35 million copies at launch in Japan, > 2 million with Digital; PS4 140k

It's possible to have that Digital ratio when it's sold out in Japan. Hopefully it's true. Can't wait for the monthly Digital sales for Famitsu.

When do we get these ?

PetsimsPer I'd guess 20% digital ratio. So that would put famitsu first week sales at 1.6m.

Mediacreate would put sales at 1.5m.

Insane  first  week sales. I'd definitely say it can do over 2m Ltd.

It is always important to point out that. Without the massive 6M userbase in Japan MHW couldn't sell 2M.

That and the almost 100k X1s!

X1 is a sad situation, even though it have over 100k X1 sold in Japan it couldn't sell a single copy of MHW.

I think digital has been getting closer to 30% so 650k digital seems pretty reasonable.

Digital is really high in the West, but when I look at the numbers from Famitsu for other games, it seems to be 10-15%.

I'm going to look for the thread that talked about it, but digital ratios have always been higher on PS platforms. While I don't think that MonHun had 30% ratio in Japan, it's going to be higher since there wasn't a huge shipment.

Going by Mediacreate's 1,245,169 physical copies sold, and Famitsu's 2 million including digital, that means around ~38% of copies sold were digital. That's an unusually high digital ratio.
There must have been a big shortage of physical copies in Japan.

Some minor corrections. The 2m in Japan is shipped + digital. We know that the shipment wasn't huge and that there is veyr little unsold stock.

I'd predict a digital ratio in the 20s for now.

Edit: Tweet wasn't embedding so I put up a screenshot.

Oh I see, it was shipped. But if the game was sold out everywhere on Day 1, that wouldn't matter right?
But I guess we'll have to await further numbers for clarification.

Correct. It experienced a very high sell through and several retailers had trouble keeping stock in. However, you'd see that same thing with any game that has a 90% sell through. Still would leave 100k+ on shelves across the entirety of the country.

I edited my post as I read through the tweet. But isn't that Tweet referring to Capcom's "5 million" statement?
Famitsu and Mediacreate usually track sold through numbers, don't they?

That tweet is, but I believe that is what Famitsu is referencing. They're citing preliminary estimates. I'd love to be wrong about this, but Famitsu will show lower than 650k when they put out their monthly digital numbers. Until we get precise numbers, I think saying it sold ~2m is pretty fair. I do think it'll be closer to MH4 than MH3P when it all comes out. Just my thoughts.

Only home console game to sell 2million since 2010.i thought consoles are dead in japan.

I think splatoon did it.? or may be just missed it.

U r right.its the second game.so consoles really are  not popular in japan.

So this is the best opening week of any Monster Hunter game in Japan?

  • MH Freedom Unite (PSP): 0.86M
  • MF Freedom 3 (PSP):         1.97M
  • MH4 (3DS):                          1.78M
  • MHX (3DS):                          1.49M
  • MH4G (3DS):                       1.50M

It appears around 38% of sales were digital. Was the physical copy of the game sold out in a lot of places in Japan as well? I've been hearing reports about that from other countries, but didn't know the situation in Japan.

But this is all thanks to the massively superior install base of PS4's in Japan that dwarfs the 3DS install base.
6M > 24M.
Capcom made a big mistake. MonHun fans didn't want better graphics.

Thank god PS4 userbase is so massive to warranty a lead over 3DS. And of course if would have sold even better with simpler graphics.
