Forums - Politics Discussion - My dear divided America.

Meh, we'll be fine.  This is nothing compared some of the periods of turmoil America has experienced in the past.  Most of the "divide" today is caused by social media providing a giant world-wide megaphone to the extremes on both sides, amplified by the cable and print media outlets with an agenda to push.

Imagine if Twitter and Facebook had existed during the 60s / Vietnam War era for example.  The country was already on the verge of tearing itself apart back then... nationwide race / anti-war protests and riots, the two Kennedy assassinations + MLK assassination, the ongoing polarization of the Vietnam War all during the backdrop of the height of the Cold War.   The presences of instantaneous social media during those days would've been enough to push America over the edge.

And let's not forget of course the Great Depression, the mob wars / Boss Tweed style corruption, the Civil War / reconstruction.  This is why people who get hysterical over every little thing these days are referred to as "snowflakes".  Our problems today are a joke compared to what past generations have had to go through.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

Of course this thread collapses lmao

I honestly will continue to avoid complaining and just appreciate life. How about y’all go to Saudi Arabia for a month and come back to talk about how devastated the US is

People have always been assholes - we simply see it more often (and on an extreme level) thanks to the internet.

Oh you talk like the people in 2005 when Erdogan just started to divide Turkey. You will see how america will look like in 5 years. Like i said i am seeing the  same arguments what erdogan did and the same reactions from both sides. Very sad. Such a nice nation.

Your inability to differentiate both Turkey and the United States is concerning (to say the least).

Turkey’s government was corrupted in a manner which gave Erdogan powers capable of dismantling the democratic roots Turkey began to grow for some time. In the United States we’ve always seen division and issues, but never have we seen a president dismantle a system intended to keep a country free.

youre talking about the Middle East after all. Instead of just dismissing my statement as ‘one of those people’, realizing twelve years is a lot of time and that the US is completely different should address your criticism. Keep in mind 2002 was over a decade ago - we may not even have trump for half a decade

Ok i will tell you now what Erdogan did and you can compare it to the current situation in the staates.

1.) He demonized the institutions inside turkey and accused them of Organizing a plot against him. This Institution was the turkish military. He said there was a secret group called ergenekon. He jailed all of them.

2.) He called the media which was not on his side "part of the ergenekon and the Barons (elites)!"

3.) He said the deep state is behind everything and that the deep state people are traitors. First it was the deep state than the freemasons than the illuminatis. This with the masons and illuminati was more in the tvs he owned. Every day a so called documantion about the deep state, the media and the masons was shown.

4.) He digged a huge ditch and divided the country so much that one side HATED the other side. This didnt happened in one Night but in years.

5.) As deeper and longer the ditch was/is as more his base mutated to a radical base. He needed that ditch because that was the only way to send his base to kill or Blackmail the other side.

6.) Religious leaders in turkey said that allah has choosen him to lead the country (like the evangelican leaders in the staates)

7.) Channels close to erdogan didnt showed any facts. 0 facts. Everything they told were made up things. Nothing was ever prooved. Before one thing was investigated the next thing happened.

8.) When there were no enemies left he turned into is base and try to find old mates who started with him in the beginning and said that they are also part of the united staates.

9.) No enemies left in his base and in turkey. So he started to Search for enemies in the United staates and israel.

Number 8 and 9 will be future things which will happen in the usa. Even if some points didnt happened today they will even if trump will be impeached. That ditch will not heal.

The problem is that the Globalization was too fast for some people. We are humans. Still today in some parts of the world people are living in tribes. It is in our genetics. And for some people that was just simply too fast. Instead of understanding their side you are cutting them off. Trumps voters are not racists. Just a small part. They are just not ready to change so fast. The founders of the Globalization didnt thought that to the end.

Did you just say it's understandable to be racist because of genetics?

Please tell me that is not what you just said.

Cathy Newman? Is that you?

It would help if there were more than two parties. Now it's just the left side versus the right side. With more parties, the political climate would be more nuanced.

No doubt. Nobody fits perfectly into one of the two (often hypocritical) platforms. People feeling that they need to conform to one of those standards actually creates a divide within themselves. Their hostility towards the "other" often comes from uncertainty towards their own viewpoint, which causes them to double down on the their fractured ideology.

Having said that, once the "spell" was broken for me, it's hard to imagine crossing back to the Conservative side of the aisle. I actually realized I was more of a liberal while watching the Republican debates in 2008. When I tuned back in for the 2012 debates, it was hard to imagine how I'd ever shared mind space with a lot of the toxic views being pushed around.
