Forums - Gaming Discussion - Why does Nintendo share more sales figures than PS4 and X-Box 1 and third parties?

Was thinking of this when listening to today's Jimquisition. 

 

Nintendo's quarter reports not only generally reveal game sales for new games during that time, but they also constantly update the best selling game totals.

This page updates every time they release their quarter reports, even long after the release of major games. Mario Kart 8's numbers were updated year and after year from release, and I suspect I'd probably notice the same on the top selling Wii and DS games if I payed more attention to them. 

 

Yet you don't see that from the PS4 and Xbox titles...using Wikipedia's 'you need a citation that isn't VGchartz' info Uncharted 4 was last updated early last year, and Halo 5 hasn't been updated in years. 

 

Same with the third parties. 

I mean Nintendo's updates aren't perfect: you don't get the totals for all of their games, or even most. Yet you still get more information than the other companies. 

And when Nintendo's more open than other companies to giving people info.....tis a strange world. 



The Democratic Nintendo fan....is that a paradox? I'm fond of one of the more conservative companies in the industry, but I vote Liberally and view myself that way 90% of the time?

that's a good point. I'd love for more companies to be more forthcoming about their sales but I guess they figure it to be a detriment to give out that information.

From my understanding, during the 360 era MS were more open about their console sales numbers, while Sony weren't.

Basically, the better you are doing, the more likely you are to show your sales numbers. At least for consoles. Not sure why Sony aren't updating games like Uncharted 4 that obviously sold very well.

Makes you wonder why Nintendo always shows the info, even during the Wii U era.

I don't know much about this, but does Sony and MS have investors and share holders like Nintendo has?

Why does Nintendo? I don't know.

Why doesn't everyone else? Why would they? What is your pitch for why it is beneficial for them to take this step? If you're an employee there, what rationale are you using to explain to your bosses why this step is necessary?

Other than saying how many units they expected to ship certain years. (And those numbers could change drastically later on in the year.)

Say what? Nintendo disclosed Wii U's lifetime shipments at the end of every single quarter, just like they have for every other console of theirs since 2001.
