Forums - Gaming Discussion - Opinion: The Witcher 3 is boring, confusing, bad written and bad directed, etc...

I agree wholehartedly. I can't stand Witcher 3 and I don't see anything good with it apart from the purely technical qualities like graphics and animation.

Yes, in particular it pisses me off because of its ultra-modern cynical and nihilistic moral and culture, where everyone is so aware and conscious. Everyone has a bad mouth, everyone is perverted, filthy, hypocritical and completely unlikable. It tries to be so edgy, it's so damn politically correct that I want to vomit, the people in this world have the same mindset and awareness of human rights, moral relativism, social issues and the modern progressive worldview, just like the most conscious inner city New Yorker, despite this supposedly being kings and peasants living in a medieval fantasy world.

Witcher 3 stands for everything wrong in our modern world. It's about pissing on everything that is beautiful and decent. It has no respect for history and tradition.

There are also awful game design aspects I hate about Withcher 3, where it tries to be Red Dead Redemption rather than an RPG. It's not really an RPG at all. It uses so much smoke and mirrors when it comes to progression, leveling, items, skills and stats. Many cynical game mechanics, but I can't bother to go them through. I just get sad at mankind because so few have spotted this cynical design philosophy. It's really sad and pathetic how this cynical nihilistic (postmodern) style is considered the most sophisticated form of popular culture in our time.

What game have you been playing? It sure ain't W3. It is one of the most realistic depictions of a medieval setting, the fantasy elements excluded of course. What, did you think that the medieval age in Europe was all songs and roses? Wow, you need to do some research. Maybe you've seen too many king Arthur movies. The medieval times were hell on earth compared to the modern age. And you whine about the foul language of the peasants? Wow. And somehow everyone's foul and perverted and yet so politically correct at the same time? How does that work? You clearly don't have a clue what you're talking about. I get the vibe that Zelda is more your speed and you just tried to force yourself into something realistic and gritty because so many seem to like it. You don't and that's fine. Now go collect seeds with fairies in Asexualia. Off with you.

Skyrim and Oblivion.

Fallout3, New Vegas and 4.

I also like Dragon Age and Mass Effect.

I must add that it's really strange that you complain about same voices and faces in TW3 when this was 10 times worse in games like Oblivion where you literally have the same copy/pasted face when you talked to people with the same dialogues when for instance talking to guards in different cities. And that's not even mentioning the fact children are so painfully copy/pasted in Skyrim all the way down to their clothes. And I won't talk about copy/pasted kids in Oblivion cause they didn't even bother to put kids in that game. I guess people are born adults in that world... Yet you seem to love games like Oblivion or Skyrim but hate TW3.

Yep, it's not a W3 problem, it's a general problem. When you have a world of hundreds of voiced characters, you simply cannot afford to hire a unique voice actor for each and every one. Didn't bother me too much.

This is basically the same for me. Loved Fallout 3/NV/4 and ES 3/4/5, but absolutely despised Witcher 3. (I have played a loved Mass Effect 1 and 2, and parts of 3) I even bought the GOTY Edition since I heard it was so good. Played about 10 hours, couldn't stand the controls, and gave it to a friend. The art style was really great, and I thought the lore seemed interesting, but the actual gameplay was atrocious.

We even have Zelda avatars. Coincidence?!

Haha well thats cool, and talking of Zelda, after BotW i tried Witcher 3 GotY edition again, and i had to go around a cliff, i was like just CLIMB the hill its only 2 meter bloody high, but no Geralt had to walk around the bloody hill. I was snapped. Add in totally clunky controls and horrible combat.

See, that's the problem. You're comparing Witcher to Zelda and that's not going to work. WRPGs are not about climbing or platforming or that sort of stuff. As for controls, you probably prefer the Nintendo feel, but that's not necessarily the feel people want for a game like this. Actual combat does not feel like pressing neat little buttons on a controller, there's a challenge to it. It's about timing and balance and skill. I believe the new game Kingdom Come Deliverance is taking this aspect even further and I expect to see a fair bit of complaining about how "clunky" the controls are. People will be shocked because it's not just "press x to kill" anymore. Now, I'm not saying that the controls in W3 are flawless and the best there ever was, but at least personally I had no problems with them. It's just a matter of what works for you and what you are used to. Git gud.

That's a problem I've had with a lot of games since playing BotW. Just climb over it! It's three feet high!

Another problem I had with Witcher 3 was the arbitrary gating with levels. I made the mistake of trying to explore on Roach just outside the starting town after the pub scenes, and I was attacked by Level 15 skeletons in a graveyard not far from town and destroyed. As far as I can tell, the only way to stand a chance is just to level up so they don't do as much damage. It made me not want to explore at all.

What, level differences are "arbitrary"? You do realise that your level is supposed to represent your experience and skill? The whole point is to start as a beginner and hone your skills to become better. I absolutely hate it when enemies scale with you. Elder scrolls Oblivion has remained a plague in my memories in this regard. Even the loot drops became ridiculous. Over time even your basic highway robbers had become as powerful as elite warriors and they had gear and riches that would make kings jealous. Why would they even need to be robbers anymore? Stupid. Just stupid. It makes no sense, it's pointless. It means that no matter what progress I make, even the frigging rats and squirrels are going to give me a hard time because they magically get more powerful for no reason. You mean to tell me that a newbie adventurer would be just as good as killing skeletons as a seasoned veteran? A rat is supposed to become irrelevant over time as you become better. Skeletons are supposed to be significantly more challenging to kill than rats. At first you can't handle them, but later with experience and skill and better gear, you will beat them. That's how it's supposed to work. Do you really enjoy a world where you can beat anything at level one and it doesn't matter what the creature actually is? Rats and dragons, all the same, just swing away. What's the point? Where's the threat? Are the creatures in BotW all the same threat level or how were you able to explore at all?

Well...Witcher is not about that...not a really big problem, considering how its world was built....though it can be annoying at times.

But you can climb in Gothics...or be persistant enough to jump your way up in most cases, even with very steep cliffs (which can often reward you with something unexpected).
In Morrowind you can jump more or less depending on Acrobatics skill (IIRC).

If anything I'd wish more RPG developers would pay attention to RPG roots...as in actual dependance of your characters abilities based on atributes, skills and gear. In which case, whether your character can successfully climb something would depend on their skill, racial bonuses (if any), armor penalties and such.

Some quick responses.

- No, the OP is not satire. I´m really pissed off and took me months of frustration to admit it. I really tried to enjoy the game.

- ME and FO/TES recycled voices and models: I don´t know exactly why it didn´t bother me on those games but it made unbearable on TW3. I have a few theories.
Maybe, the game reached the Uncanny Valley for me. Characters model are really good, but not there yet. It is confusing to remember who is who.
Every Salarian had the same voice, however, everyone had a different colour and some distinct feature. It was also a game with 5 or more very distinct races. And ME wasn´t a real open world, one could enjoy each quest with time.
In Bethesda games side quests are mostly barebones, you don´t need to waste hours only to save a settlement or repair a water-cleaning facility. You don´t need to go to a long conversation with a miserable peasant. You can explore an area at your pleasure.
Or, maybe I´m getting older.

I´m a fan of the Soul series. I can dig into an RPG that has a cryptic lore and cynical characters. But combat in Dark Souls, and the sense of dread made me advance into the game and explore the world.

I agree with someone here wrote: there are times TW3 seems to try to emulate a GTA game or RDR. I would say more, TW3 seems to try to emulate a half dozen of games, like Assassins Creed, TES, Dark Souls, ME...

If you ever feel you have to "waste hours" playing a video game, then you're clearly not enjoying it. Maybe you really are growing out of gaming :) I can sympathize to a degree, I've been gaming for 30+ years and sometimes I feel like I've seen everything a thousand times, only the graphics get better. My selection of games is narrowing slowly, not everything piques my interest anymore. No problem with W3, however. For me, it blew the doors open and became a new platinum standard for how games should be made. Can't wait for Cyberpunk. Give me long and good quality side quests with deep characters over the hollow and barebones stuff of Bethesda's worlds any day. They even have those radient quests because they seem to be about quantity over quality. I don't get the appeal of a randomizer churning out endless and repeating token quests. Well, the good thing about sidequests is that you can ignore them completely if you wish. I guess we're both complaining for no good reason :D
