Forums - Nintendo Discussion - When does the 3DS line get a price cut, and how much?

I think we can probably agree that the 3DS line will be getting a price cut this year. When will it be announced, when will it take effect and how much will the various models be reduced?

I wouldn’t count on it. The Wii U’s last price cut was over three years before it was discontinued, so it’s not like every system will be guaranteed one at any point.

I dont think it will happen. If they do, it will only be the 2DS XL since the rest of em will be discontinued this year.

Wiiu didn't had a real price drop, what you cite is the discontinuation of  the basic set ( 8gb storage white WiiU ) back in mid 2013 and the price of premium/deluxe set 1( 32gb storage black wiiu) getting the price point of the basic set.

I think the WiiU didn't get a price cut because they never achieved economy of scale in production that would lower the net cost to produce each unit, meaning they had to keep the price as was or else they'd lose money on each unit sold. I don't think that's an issue with the 3DS line, especially at this point. Without a Pokemon game coming to the handheld this year (I think), what other "system selling" games would there be to push units at this point? It's so late in the life cycle the way to move units now is to cut price.

Current prices
2DS w/game-$79.99
New 2DS XL-$149.99
New 3DS XL-$199.99

N3DS XL will likely be phased out this year with no official price cut, just various retailer discounts to get rid of stock.

2DS is so low that it has no need for a price cut. If you wont spend $80 for a console and a game than you just dont want one.

N2DS XL will probably get temporary discounts to $99.99 this holiday.

2DS/N2DS will be phased out in 2019.

Nintendo shipped 40k gba units in other region in 2010, 130k for ds in 2014 in Americas/others region and even 20k 2015? Are you sure that 3ds would get discontinued before 2020? Switch has no bc and 3ds hasn't hit the point of saturation in the west.

2DS - discontinued
New 3DS - discontinued
New 3DS XL - $169.99 (is $199.99)

I really hope they lower prices a bit, but the sales were really good during the holidays at the current prices. Not sure Nintendo has an incentive to lower them

New 2ds xl release was an implicit price drop, it's a thinner with some nice additions/changes new 3ds xl in a smaller body for 50$ less.

Even cheaper than original 3ds ( after the price cut ) , extremely tempting for old 3ds/3ds xl owners to upgrade, right?
