Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Emily Rogers: Lots of Switch Ports For 2018; NSMBU Switch Port Coming?

Meh, would much rather have a new 2D Mario title that feels like an actual upgrade from the "New" series.

If it releases this fall it will be a nearly 6 year old port and we havent had a traditional 2D Mario in that time frame.

Kinda a bummer if true.

If they think they're going to sell 20 million units with this kind of strategy, they better have some killer 3rd party deals to unveil, because otherwise it aint happening.
Kind of reminds me of when Iwata expected the wii u to sell 10 million units in a year (I forget which) and that's kind of scary.

I make game analyses on youtube:

FFVI: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mSO6n8kNCwk
Shadow of the Colossus: https://youtu.be/9kDBFGw6SXQ
Silent Hill 2: https://youtu.be/BwISCik3Njc
BotW: https://youtu.be/4auqRSAWYKU

give me Xenoblade X and Mario Maker this year, and anything else is a bonus. Tokyo Mirage Sessions would be nice too but i think the chances of that are non-existent

2019 better be something special though if this year is quiet

I can't help but feel quite disappointed if this were true . I don't know how the market would react. On the one hand many people that did not purchase the Wii U did not experience these games, on the other hand I can see backlash forming from the announcement of too many ports. Another issue is that a bulk of these titles are 2D side scrolling games including many of the newer titles, there is simply not enough variety here. I am also not sure if third-parties will really remedy this situation, since Nintendo themselves have, for the most part, been the biggest pushers of their hardware with software. It was certainly detrimental for third-parties when Nintendo left them alone in the initial days of 3DS and Wii U. In addition, much of the third-party content we know of up to now has been ports, which would make for excellent support titles, but I am not sure how many systems they could really move.

As for NSMBU (which, btw, is being rumoured by some that correctly predicted Monster Hunter Worlds and Dark Souls Remaster), I don't know why they cannot, at the very least, create a new game here. An enhanced port of a large-scale game like Smash would have been acceptable, since those take a long time to make. However, NSMB, for the most part, simply needs a couple level designers and a few programmers (Nintendo made NSMB2 and NSMBU in the same period); Mario Maker, which was a retooled and more user friendly version of their internal level design system, basically demonstrated that it is not a resource intensive process. This particular rumor, if true, would be a real shame because it would mean that Nintendo is publishing a direct port of game that was originally criticized for playing it way too safe and lacking major innovation (and one that as a launch title did not manage to sell the Wii U concept to the masses).

I really hope there is more than this (old first-party ports, new first-party side scrollers plus some side-scroller ports, old third-party ports, LABO) if Nintendo intends to move 20 million units or even sell as many units as this year, because with this rumoured lineup...I just don't know.

Not always correct, but undeniably right sometimes. In this case the statement is already pretty much proven, the mini direct unveiled port after port.

Not to rely solely on them indefinitely. 3rd partys will supplement the ports and new games from Nintendo, and it's just to get by this year.

We know of four new games in the first half of 2018: Kirby, Mario Tennis, Labo Set 1 and 2.

Sounds like she is exaggerating and refering to Metroid as a big gun doesn't help her case.

It’s a massive gun! It could potentially sell over ONE MILLLION copies.

Yep, this is what I expect. 2018 will be mostly ports of third parties and a disappointing first party line up. I actually expect them to release one big game in 2018 though, like a new Smash Bros. But I expect lots of third party ports or small third party games like SNK Heroines. That mini direct is just a taste of what's to come. Plenty more third party ports than that.

EDIT: We won't really even begin to see the true face of the Switch until 2019.  That is when Switch sales will take off like a rocket.  For the coming year the Switch line up might be somewhat disappointing though.

I don't think Nintendo can afford an off year, particularly when their system is still young and needs to increase its installbase. When a system loses momentum and the company cannot turn it around quickly then it becomes unlikely that they will be able to turn it around in the long-term. Also, should sales fall, you can bet the mainstream media is going start all of the Nintendoomed and "they should go third-party/mobile" stuff again like they did during the Wii U years (particularly in the early parts of it), and this in turn will turn-off potential customers from purchasing the system.

They must have lots of 3rd party support, the best in a long time, and one or two big guns (Animal Crossing and Smash Bros., even if the latter is also a port) to accompany them if they plan on selling 20 million units because I'm still unsure if Labo is going to blow up the way they hope it will and that alone certainly won't get the job done.

I feel most of her leaks are just educated predictions rather than actual leaks

might be just me though :/
