Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Worldwide Xbox One sales dropped below Xbox 360 in 2017

I guess this means subtracting PS4's sold-through numbers from EA's estimates is not the way to go (in fact, it's a terrible way to pinpoint the XB1's WW sales) and confirms that both companies use different methodologies to arrive at their numbers.

I think the best way to narrow down the XB1's WW sales is to go with a US percentage range to come up with a ballpark estimate. We don't know if the US:WW ratio has largely remained static, shifted in favor to the US, or shifted in favor WW (though I think the third scenario is the least likely). Let's say the US makes up between 55% to 60%. Extrapolating from the approximately 20.12m US sales from NPD, the XB1's WW sales fall somewhere between 33.53m to 36.58m.

That hardly anyone can dispute or deny since MS won't reveal any number.

Because sources with insider information said so?

I don't know what kind of information Niko have access to, or if Zhuge based his comment on information he had access to, or something that was made public. That's why I asked.

"Did Microsoft state that sales are down YoY two years in a row?"

Why would they? thats bad PR, instead they  ll mention how many hours of gameplay this year had, how many bullets where fired in this and that game ect.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but haven't people been able to discern that certain months were up or down YoY even though Microsoft didn't outright say so, by piecing together information we got from all three companies?
I haven't kept track of their PR as of late, so I thought they may have accidentally revealed something that people picked up on.

For me, I assumed that the XB1 was below the 360 launch aligned after the end of 2016 because Xbox Wire mentioned that the XB1 was outpacing its predecessor after Holidays 2015, but did not mention that after Holidays 2016. IHS Markit, a very large company that does industry data analysis as one of its main services, estimated the XB1's sales to be 27.6m by the end of 2016, so I thought there was some weight behind interpreting Microsoft's silence in regards to the XB1's relative performance to the 360 launch-aligned.

It could be that Zhuge's company uses a different methodology and as a result, arrived at a different conclusion.

Right, but PS3 was an objective failure for Sony. PS4 is not.

I cant understand why anybody would think XBO would be massively up this year.

VGC numbers
2014-7.9m
2015-8.6m
2016-8.4m
2017-8.4m

4 years of relatively stable sales followed by a huge boost in the 5th year? Not likely.

360 had a really big jump in its 5th year but that was due to Kinect which attracted a new casual audience that was not previously on 360.

The new X model appeals to hardcore gamers and tech enthusiasts at its price of $499 and that will remain true even with a price cut to $399.

The safest bet for sales this year would be to continue selling in the same range it has the last 4 years.

Only USA. Japan and eventually some Gfk number for Xbox could be extracted or compared against PS4 and WiiU.... WW we only have like VGC and the comments from AMD or EA.

The only reason that the 360 sold so well, was because of the beginning on the gen blunders by Sony, imo. That turned most people to Xbox, even though PS3 caught up in sales, by the end of the gen.

In your opinion indeed. The early years of the X360, bar all the RRoD fun times, were laden with fantastic games and lots of effort from Microsoft (started going downhill with Kinect IMO, but by that time, Sony has recovered). There is good reason why people turned off PS3 went to X360... and also, piracy is a huge factor in many countries.

VGchartz and NPD hence why we're here .... ya it''s way too early to know what's going on. I'm waiting on January data... if XB1 is up year over year it's a good sign of what will happen. If the numbers are flat or lower Year to year it's extremely bad for XB1, I don't see how the numbers could be down.

You are the one that mention Amazon .... people keep comparing Amazon but it's such a bad matrix to compare Ps4 to Xbox one... because you have all the Xbox one bundles vs Sony that only has a four normally ...

I'm not comparing Xbox to PS4. So I don't see why you continue to.

I'm looking at Xbox, on its own, and comparing it to itself (2018 vs 2017). I don't see a way that it'll be up YoY. And the numbers could be down for several good reasons. No X launch this year, for starters.

it also could be reason why xbox is up YoY. Xbox has got back the prettiest 3rds now and everyone knows it so if i only would play fifa and cod for example i would buy a XboxOneX in the future only because of this one reason.

So why is Xbox could be up for me is:

1. XOneX is there (better 3rds etc.)

2. More exclusives then last year

3. Early access Program if a trend like PubG and other continues.

1. Having the best looking multiplats (on console) isn't going to matter much (I'm not seeing the One X suddenly jumping ahead on Amazon, for example). So, again, that's moot. CoD and Fifa will continue to sell many, many more units on the PS4. This is critical, because for fortunes to change, people have to ignore the PS4 versions of those games.

2. More games than last year should help, yes, but they'd also have to be system movers to really change the bottom line.

3. Early Access Program. For it to make a dent, we'll have to see the trend on Amazon (the only place we can have even a slight idea of Xbox One is doing).

If you dont think best 3rds and more exclusives can sell consoles why do you think ps4 is in 1st place this gen?
