I think you got it all wrong. If your Microsoft and about to release Halo 6 in November 2019. Would you want to make $60 and have the game sell to 5 million customers (sales 300million) or would you rather have 10-20 million customers subscribed to a $9.99/month gamepass (Sales 100-200 Million a month) ???
300 millions in one time sales VS. 100-200 Million a month in sales. Even if there a drop off after major release they will make a killing.

Tbf this will hurt them short term. Halo 5 made $400m first week and when Halo 6 launches on gamepass I doubt it will make $400m fw. But in the long run like 4-5 years from now MS will be making a lot from gamepass.

Still wrong, Halo 5 only sold about 5million on Xbox one lifetime. 400M in the first week was just a marketing figure around the launch of Halo 5, its not from sales of the game alone.
Halo 5 sold 1.5 milllion copies in the first week ... sales of the game itself is about 90-100 million.
You will sell a lot more gamepass at $9.99/month then you would of retail release of $59.99. Extra revenue can be made if you manage to get more from the bigger install base with DLC, season pass & micro transactions. Most importantly push hardware sales. Every Microsoft consoles now comes with a one month gamepass subscription. That means you reduce the cost of hardware by price of a game. With the Xbox one S price dropping to $199.99 that will really appeal to mass market.
