Forums - Nintendo Discussion - The Labo-ratory: VGC OFFICIAL Labo Thread (Vehicle Kit out now)

I'm torn between wanting people to stop complaining about paying $70 for cardboard and a game, and really enjoying to hear them complain about how excited everyone is about this game. I say, keep it up, y'all! It's so fun to watch you guys type paragraph upon paragraph disparaging Nintendo and this product since you're obviously flummoxed to the core about how this could have any appeal to anyone. And I'm really glad you guys don't have jobs at Nintendo because then we might be denied these wacky concepts they always dream up.

Looks like it may be fun but not sure if I'd want. I guess I need to see more hands-on on how the experience with the software.

I'm going to show the video to my kids tonight to get their reaction. We already have 2 Switches in the house and my youngest is saving for one as well (she has saved $150 so far).

After looking into it a bit more and looking at the general buzz it looks like my prediction might be off. I impressed at the response it is getting. Now I am very curious on how it sells. The Switch doesn't have a big kid market yet so in a way this is a blue ocean game.

Then again I don't know any company that is making a cardboard game.

(killeryoshis note - Who put that there ?)
Switch is 9th generation. Everyone else is playing on last gen systems! UPDATE: This is no longer true

It's very interesting, but I am most curious as to see if it ends up more like WiiFit or PSVR.

You mean... a strong success like Wii Fit (>40M) or a niche success like PSVR (~2M).

I personally guess niche success. It will be wildly successful in it's designated niche (kids), but not reach much outside. So, seeing that are two SKUs and people might buy both - 5 million?

Exactly correct, sir.

Pre-orders seem healthy on Amazon.

I think that there are an awful lot of people (I'm not just aiming at VGC users, here) that just aren't understanding the whole "For kids and the kids at heart" concept.  It's pretty simple, really.  If you aren't a kid, or a kid at heart, or a parent with young children...this isn't for you.  It isn't meant for you, it isn't being marketed towards you and there is zero reason to talk about how stupid the concept is, because...it isn't being made for you.

The concept came from way out in left field, I agree.  Who would have ever seen something this zany coming, even from Nintendo?  But, it's pure genius.

This is a perfect idea for parents who spend time with their kids doing arts and crafts, to then be able to combine these "science projects" with technology in a way such as this.  The added ability for kids to color or put decals on their projects to really make them their own vs them coming with pre-determined designs/colors is cool.  I'm not saying there certainly will be, but there could be huge potential for these "Toy-con" to advance and grow through all sorts of different ideas.  Looking at what they've already thought of, hopefully the only limit is imagination on the part of Nintendo, or 3rd parties that may come up with some innovative ideas that Nintendo doesn't.  Even if the toys aren't a long term success (I don't personally see them being a long term part of their business model), how many toy lines are a one or two year hit, make their money and then are no longer the thing to have.  Didn't necessarily make it a bad toy for it's time.

Also, on a side note.  This project is not taking away from time spent on developing the "gamer's games".  The teams responsible for triple A titles like Metroid or Mario are not doing Labo mini games software and in turn delaying those bigger games.  That's just ridiculous.

This is the title Retro has been working on I kid , I kid

I hated it!

Not really sure what the criticism is of cardboard. It is light, it is pliable, it is cheap, it is replaceable, it is easy to store and it is a great craft material...

No need to make personal attacks just because you don't like the idea.

Telling people that I think they're chumps for buying a mark up gimmick is attacking them? It's actually an opinion, but whatever - be offended I guess.

You can download the schematics for free and use cardboard you have lying around - no markup. You still need the game though.

In the contrary. If this makes money, that means Nintendo can hire more people to create "gamer's games".
