Forums - Sales Discussion - PS4 sells 6m in Japan

Let's take a look at other home consoles from its generation. Xb1 88k and WiiU 3m.

Yeah it's doing pretty superb by current market standards for traditional home consoles. Considering how much more profitable ps4 is compared to ps3 especially when you consider ps plus subs, Sony must be delighted with Japan this gen compared to last.

That isn't exactly steep competition. I'm with folk who say this is nothing to be proud of. It's doing only 2x better than the worse selling home console since the Dreamcast. Not much of a milestone.

I also do not understand at all where the expectation comes from that MHW is going to be this killer app in Japan. Do people not understand the nature behind the success of MH over there in the first place, or the purpose behind MHW specifically?

It's not meant to sell PS4's in Japan - it's meant to sell MH, as a franchise, in the West. The success of MH in Japan is extremely dependent on the local multiplayer component. That's why portability is so important. It's a social experience over there. Not that I think it'll do poorly, but temper your expectations if you seriously think this game is going to light a fire in Japan. I wouldn't be surprised if it was the best selling MH in the west, but I also wouldn't be surprised if it became one of the worst selling MHs in Japan. And not just because of the 6m installed base.

You'd have a point if ps4 stopped selling now. It may be double the dreamcast now but it's far from finished selling.

Japanese devs that rely primarily on Japanese sales with big games are in huge minoroty.

They still matter which is my original point.

Lol, but if Japanese devs that that rely primarily on Japanese sales with big games are in huge minoroty, that means its not important, it would be important if its opposite situation.

So it is doing great for a console in Japan, thanks, wasn't hard.

It seems that you either dont fully master english, or you simply cant read that well.Anyways, if you have further questions, just read my previous posts.

I may have problems with my English... but reading your definition of "not doing well" is basically you comparing it as a console to a non-console competitor to say it isn't doing good.

It does matter because not to the same extent.

How it does matter if Japanese devs will/would keep making games regardless how PS4 performs in Japan!?

Remember last year?! Remember last gen?! We wouldn’t see as much support for the system if it didn’t sell great in Japan. That’s a given.

But PS4 is selling on pair with PS3, Switch is selling much better than Wii U. And point is that today Japanese big games are selling much better in West than they are selling in Japan.

Consoles are not sold in a vacuum, you have to account for the current tech climate in Japan. Home consoles are not a thing there anymore, not to the extent they once were. Come on, you know this.
Looking at the WW success of the PS4, it's pretty clear that the console itself is not to blame. It's selling as well as it ever could in today's Japan. If it's outpacing the PS3, I think it's pretty safe to say it's doing great. Assessments have to be adjusted according to the environment, you can't simply assign some random target number as a marker for success.

I'd be happier if the Switch wasn't outpacing it as much as it does

The Switch will most likely outsell it this year.

Looks like it.

Obviously switch is selling faster then Wii u because it's portable.

Japan allows ps4 to get a ton of Japanese exclusives in the West. Games that don't appear on its main rival the xbox one. It's very important for ps4 to have this. Japan sales really do matter.
