Forums - Microsoft Discussion - RUMOR: Perfect Dark Returning Without Rare

Probably for the best.

not sure why anyone would want modern day rare involved.

Around the Network

The rumor is circulating a while now (check the Xbox empire thread more often =p).

But if you remember Coalition was named black Tusk before and they teased a game before working on Gears of War.

They probably work back on that game and make it into a Perfect Dark game

Ugh, sounds destined for being underwhelming.

I expect it to suck. Perfect Dark was great for the gameplay, not the characters or story. And knowing MS it will probably just be the PD characters/story shoehorned into some boring online multiplayer focused shooter.

Not at all.Perfect Dark is one of the few games that nailed everything they did, from charachters and story up to gameplay and world building.

And this is what makes making a new perfect dark so hard. Its not only the gameplay feel that they need to nail, but also the atmosphere, the overall game structure(not linear, but not open either, making completing the objectives so fun and entertaining).I would very much love for them to try it, and if they suceed, it would make me consider buy an XOneS when its dirty cheap.

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

So if they can't recapture the original game's audience they'll find a new one?

Thing is, the original audience isn't exactly huge, Perfect Dark sold 2.5m which by today's standards isn't exactly a lot for an exclusive. They could try to make another Perfect Dark shooter to recapture the old audience, but the last time they tried that with Perfect Dark Zero it was a big flop, and even if they succeed where Zero failed the upper limit is about the same as the first game, since standard singleplayer shooter aren't exactly hugely successful these days.

A reboot on the other hand, with a different genre, probably stands a better chance at reviving the series. Gamers like story driven games these days, just look at series like Uncharted and Horizon over at Sony, they do extremely well, and MS has been lacking games that cater to that audience. By creating a story driven Perfect Dark game instead of a story driven new IP, they can capitalize on the original fanbase while also attracting new fans, it's their best chance of success imo.

Perfect Dark was already story driven though. It wasnt up to the point like Uncharted, but it very much had a strong story. If MS manages to make an exceptional game, and reboot the series(which lets be honest, they just need totake the original game story and expand it), assuming it gets a good marketing push, MS could be seeing a new franchise that could move consoles and be associated to the xbox brand.

Nostalgia goggles? PD's gameplay was never great. The options in 2000 were just very limited.

The push for online focused games isn't really a thing anymore. MS has even published/funded numerous games without online play. I imagine a PD reboot would have some online mode, but even in the original game had a multiplayer focus.

The gameplay was excellent back in the day, much like Goldeneye gameplay was back in the day, but is pretty much bad if you compare to today standard. There are some thing that dont age well, and well, Goldeneye and PD were the pioneers in the FPS genre, at least in the console space.

For the better if true. Considering how Gears 4 turned out to be, the Coalition seems to be a superior development team to Rare.

Vote the Mayor for Mayor!

Fully expect this to turn out true after K.I. and the news that Insomniac Games were approached to do Conker. Microsoft said it wants to revive old Rare IP a while back so I bet there are either more in the works or there will be in time.

Insomniac Games doing Conker? When was this?

Nevermind, it was a few years ago but I just looked it up to link the details but it turns out it was a hoax.
