Forums - Politics Discussion - Reported hijab attack on an 11-year-old girl did not happen - Fake News?

Canadian media report the story was 100% fake and made up by the girl.

An 11-year-old girl's report last week that a man tried to cut off her hijab as she walked to school didn't occur, Toronto police said Monday.

"After a detailed investigation, police have determined that the events described in the original news release did not happen," police said.

"The investigation is concluded."

The girl reported Friday that a man attempted twice to cut off her hijab as she walked to school with her younger brother. Police said last week that the alleged attack was being investigated as a possible hate crime.

CBC News is not naming the 11-year-old out of a concern for her interests.

The girl, along with her mother and representatives from the Toronto District School Board, spoke to reporters inside her school Friday after she had talked to police.

Her story captured national attention, and drew public condemnation from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne and Toronto Mayor John Tory.

The issue is not the kid, its is how easily the media turned this into an international stroy without any fact checking to push islamaphobia narrative ^^^

I stand by that these sob stories should never be considered news in the first place, regardless of veracity. Make some nice end-of-year police reports, with everything nicely categorized and numeric.

People should not tolerate any blatant play at emotions in their source of information on the world.

Bet with PeH:

I win if Arms sells over 700 000 units worldwide by the end of 2017.

Bet with WagnerPaiva:

I win if Emmanuel Macron wins the french presidential election May 7th 2017.

I wouldn't consider it fake news. It was covered as something that's undergoing investigation and wasn't reported as fact.

News organizations really need to verify if a story is true or not BEFORE they report it as true. This stuff only gives more credence to ones who call them fake news or biased media. I can't fault them for it either. 😽

You are referencing an article that clearly states that police confirms that the attack did not happen, so I don´t get the issue? Yes, media outlets should always be cautious about all storys they get, and report if the news are incorrect.

And using the term "Fake news" - this is a soundbite term mostly used by an orange president to knock down on every news he does not like, independent of its correctness. Can we just skip using such a simplistic term promoted by a reality star?

First of all, it was the news or Hillary that first start using that term. I think that it was right after the election when they tried to say trump won because of "fake news" being circulated on facebook. A lot of the right thought that the term was ironic. The news doesn't like the term so much now.

The issue is that the story became international news overnight without them checking into it. They're too invested in this little war of theirs and it's making them look stupid.

Leftist media has been desperately pandering to any group that could be used as anti-conservative votes for the past year. It's hilarious that they have the gay community defending Islam. A religion that will literally imprison and kill them if it ever becomes the law of the land.

Despite some of the problems trump has, he does make a point about the media. It really is about sensationalizing and pushing agendas one way or another. The fact this wasn't verified before being put out by media outlets is just another example of the sad state that the mainstream media is in. Use to love watching CNN as a kid (don't judge me), but it has become more and more partisan as time has gone on, and I find myself watching more hockey these days than cable news. Sigh*

Made a bet with LipeJJ and HylianYoshi that the XB1 will reach 30 million before Wii U reaches 15 million. Loser has to get avatar picked by winner for 6 months (or if I lose, either 6 months avatar control for both Lipe and Hylian, or my patrick avatar comes back forever).
