The PS3 and 360 sold closely to each other. The PS4 is dominating.

Yeah that's how I remember it. The 360 did dominate the FPS genre though.

I made sure to word it vaguely in the OP but I think 360 titles outsold the PS3 version more often than not. I think PlayStation normally won out with games like Final Fantasy and titles that just "felt right" on PS (Metal Gear, for example) but games that catered to a Western audience (FPS, WRPG, Sandbox, etc) were solidly in the Xbox camp. I'm going off of memory which can be flawed, of course.

It's crazy how things can change over the course of a new generation.

I'd say it was pretty even. Games like GTA 5 all the Soccer games and the racing games sold better on PS3. Shooting games, especially cod, sold better on Xbox. RPGs favoured PS3 but I think a few games like Oblivion sold better on Xbox. America sport games sold better on 360 while PS3 dominated JRPGs

I don't play sales.

And people talking about the 2:1 PS4 have over X1... there were some games PS3 sold like 2:1 over X360 even while it was a lot behind in HW total.

Also specific games attach ratio tend to be higher on smaler userbase so some of the 2:1 difference is lost over there. So for genres that X1 could dominate it wouldn't be impossible for X1 to outsell PS4 even more if that game was USA-centric.

PS3 was able to have fighters, RPGs, racers and I believe adventurers and platforms lead and in some case a lot bigger presence (outselling in USA the X360 version even though it was almost 2:1 under over there for a lot of games).

Those differences can be fully explained by the difference of popularity in regions like Europe, Japan and the US.

Halo 5 ;)

To be honest yeah, the audience is similar for both consoles.

Yea, 360 had quite the lead in America, where those types of games sell the most. It kinda impressive that PS3 still outsold for some games in the US.

As for your last sentence, that's just what happens when Playstation is firing on all cylinders. Heck, even last gen, with PS3 sputtering for the first year or two, it finished ~15M less than the Wii.

Off-topic: I wasn't aware that the Xbox One didn't have a 10 million seller. Just not something I'd expect after the good few the 360 had.

womt that mean like over 30% of xb1 gamers buy a game?
