Breaking 5 million is a tall order, but it's possible, especially since it's a multiplat. That said, I don't think it will get that high. 2-3 million is my estimate.

Hirokazu Hamamura, President of Enterbrain, the publisher of Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu, believes it "could" do 10m lifetime sales.

"Hamamura-san predicted that the new entry in the celebrated Monster Hunter series has enough clout to give sales of PlayStation hardware a big boost on the console's home turf. He says that there are many players who have been waiting for a new home console Monster Hunter game, and we all know how popular the franchise is in Japan.

He also says the game itself has the potential to sell 10 million copies during its lifetime, citing the volume of players who enjoyed the beta tests, and its sheer popularity in the Land of the Rising Sun. Pre-orders for the title are apparently way above expectations, too."

So he is predicting a level of success on the order of games like Uncharted 4, Destiny, etc and well beyond peer-titles like Dark Souls?

Yeah that's not delusional....

His prediction is based on many speculative "if's": if it "gives sales of PlayStation hardware a big boost on the console's home turf", and if "many players [in Japan] have been waiting for a new home console Monster Hunter game."

Yet, the COMG will likely end with less than half the points of the last mainline Monster Hunter title (1600+ for MHW vs. 3872 for MH4.) So it doesn't look like these assumptions are holding.

Hes not saying "if" that happends.
Hes saying he think it will give a boost to hardware sales in japan.

He doesnt mention why he believes it has the potential to reach 10m, other than how successfull the beta tryouts was, and how popular the title is in japan, and that console owners have waited along time for a new monster hunter title..

The bolded is what I said, except you make a stronger statement that he asserted it to be so rather than leaving for the chance that it is conditional, which I might agree upon rereading what was said.

Yet the game is still tracking to do half of what the previous mainline Monster Hunter has done in Japan.

It would make more sense if he was talking about the game being western-focused, or multi-plat than mention Japanese sales (which are almost certainly going to decline with respect to handheld titles.)

Either way, ten million is a ridiculous prediction for a single Monster Hunter game, and I don't even know why you'd post it, especially since it is based on flimsy assumptions.  That doesn't mean Capcom won't make a lot of money reusing assets in the inevitable expansions and portable versions though. It doesn't need to sell ten million to be successful.

It was a reply to a guy that said he though it would only do 2m lifetime sales.

Why I posted it? because I think the "head" of Famitsu, knows better than some random user on this site.

If he think it has the potential to reach 10m, its def. going to go over 2m..... people proclaiming doom & gloom for MHW are nuts.
the Pre-orders and Beta try-outs have gone really well.

So your argueing with me for no reason at all? just because?
it was kinda obvious it was a reply to a guy that made a ridiculous low prediction.

Also I believe saying Potential to reach 10m, is less crazy than saying it ll only do 2m lifetime.
Again this is from Famitsu.

It is already #3 in the monthly .

I think a lot of people will be very surprised how well this game is gonna do.

There is just so much positive talk about this game when it comes to the game itself, this is all this game needs, and it will blow past so many milestones just because people will enjoy it and thats it.
And I am backing this up by what people talk about and my experience with the Beta.

I myself havent played a MH game since monster hunter freedom unite. And everyone that played with me back then is gonna jump on board for this one.

Isn't that a revisionist interpretation of the post you quoted?

^ That doesn't look like a hard prediction of 2 million max.

The appeal to authority argument is pretty lazy and unconvincing, especially when one observes the available data, known facts about the series, and acknowledges that the guy one is citing is the head of a magazine publication company, not a sales analyst. It's like saying "I think the electronics analyst Michael Pachter knows better than some random user on this site" except worse.

Certainly possible. I hope it can grow.
