No, I'm not counting action RPGs that happen to be made in Japan like Dark Souls. Games like Ys VIII and Xenoblade count, since they are very much JRPGs.  Each Poke'mon entry will only count once, regardless of Nintendo always releasing 2-3 versions of the same Poke'mon game. Fire Emblem games aren't going to be counted towards this, but Valkyria Chronicles 4 will be.

Persona 5 will eventually get a portable Switch edition.

Falcom's Legend of Heroes series will come to Switch.

There's still a big market for portable RPGs out there. 3DS has a massive JRPG library, and now it looks like all that JRPG goodness has nowhere to go but Switch. Games like Octopath, YS VIII, SMTV, and Valkyria Chronicles 4 show that JRPG devs are already making the transition.

So if Pokemon releases say......Earth and Sky, that is one.

What if they release a Emerald/Platinum esc bettered version later, a Stars or Seas or something.

.....I suck at false game titles.

Earth/Sky/Stars/Seas count as one game. Same way that Sun/Moon/UltraSun/UltraMoon all count as one game.

Seems like a low number. Quite a few reviewers will be more welcoming of JRPGs when they don't have to be played on a handheld.

I think JRPGs still get a bad wrap. There's easily 7 reviews of Xenoblade 2 that are "I don't like JRPGs the review". Xenoblade 2 couldn't get past 83 meta, so smaller less ambitious JRPGs will still have a hard time breaking 80.

looked at PS4 to see where it was at so far.... I think it just barely manages this "20+ jrpg's 80+", but its argueable because of expansions ect.

1 Persona 5 - 93
2 Bloodborn - 92
3 Dark Souls 3 - 89
4 FFXIV - Stormblood - 89
5 Nier Automata - 88
6 Nioh - 88
7 Bloodborne: the Old Hunteres - 87
8 Drak Souls II - Scholar of the first Sin - 87
9 Odin Sphere Lelfthrasir - 87
10 Final Fantasy XII - The zodiac Age - 86
11 Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward - 86
12 Final Fantasy XIV Online: A Realm Reborn - 86
13 Nioh's Bloodshed's End - 85
14 Final Fantasy IX - 85
15 Ys VIII Lacrimosa of Dana - 85
16 Yakuza 0 - 85
17 Valkyria Chronicles Remastered - 84
18 Kingdom Hearts I.5 + 2.5 HD remix - 84
19 Final Fantasy X / X-2 HD remaster - 84
20 Dark Souls III: The Ringed City -82
21 Children of Zodiarcs - 81
22 Final Fantasy XV - 81
23 Disgaea 5 - Alliance of vengeance - 80
24 Yakuza Kiwami - 80

and still has stuff like (below 80):

Atelier Sophie: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Book
Blue Reflection Sword of the Girl Who Dances in Illusions
Tales of Berseria
Valkyria Revolution
Tokyo Xanadu eX+
Final Fantasy VII
Kingdom Hearts 2.8

Yeah the bolded I wouldn't put in the list, so I'd put the current for PS4 at 12.

For comparison with another console though, 3ds only had 16.

pokemon x/y
pokemon sun/moon
pokemon OR/AS
Xenoblade Chronicles 3D
Dragon Quest VIII
Bravely Default
Etrian Odyssey IV
Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse
Shin Megami Tensei IV
Persona Q
Etrian Odyssey 2
Bravely Second End Layer
Dragon Quest VII
Etrian Odyssey Untold: Millenium Girl
Etiran Odyssey V
Pokemon Ultra Sun/Moon

18 if you count Mario & Luigi games, and 20 if you count monster hunter as well.

So I would say Switch will make the over 20 mark, I think it'll have more than the 3ds, as it won't just get handheld games.

If FF7 were released today, with modern graphics, instead of 1997, I could see it getting 81-82 meta. That's how much certain modern reviewers hate JRPGs.

Don't forget SMT: Devil Survivor 2 Record Breaker. Also, Strange Journey Redux and Radiant Historia are likely to get 80+ metas when they launch this year.

So if we take out Monster Hunter, but include the Mario and Luigi games we are at 19. After the final two games, later this year, we should be at 21 hopefully.

That does seem very possible, though I'm hoping the system will get 20+ RPGs from 3rd parties alone, and moreso the traditional kind. That'd be pretty great I feel.

I too thought it was too little but after looking at all the other consoles it is not. Ether way I think it will easily happen. I think getting quality jrpgs to come to the west will be the bigger challenge.

Switch is 9th generation. Everyone else is playing on last gen systems! UPDATE: This is no longer true

3DS barely made the cut according to OP's criteria so I don't imagine it to be any easier for the Switch when reviewers have higher expectations/standards than ever and JRPGs are still stagnant but let's take a look at what we have so far ...

Xenoblade Chronicles 2
Lost Sphear (probably won't get an 80 metascore)
Atelier Lydie & Suelle (series only had an 80 metascore once out of the many releases and versions so likely same deal as above)
Dark Souls
Dragon Quest XI
Fire Emblem (doesn't count according OP)
Project Octopath Traveler (could easily suck like most of Acquire's other projects since their best remotely recent project, Rain still couldn't reach an 80 metascore even under Sony's supervision so I don't imagine SE to be any better when we take a look at I am Setsuna or probably the upcoming Lost Sphear)
Valkyria Chronicles 4
The World Ends With You
Ys VIII
Shin Megami Tensei V
Tales of (only just reached an 80 metascore with the latest entry on PC out of the many last entries)
Pokemon

In the most optimistic scenario OP is looking at 12 physical retail releases with a metascore of at least 80 so far and the rest of what OP mentions such as Persona 5 getting released on the Switch along with the Legend of Heroes is nothing but pure hope ...

Does the JRPG on the Switch tend to have higher metacritic than PS4 or Vita? Or is it lower or anout the same.

The demo was actually pretty good. It could suck, but from the demo it feels like a darker toned Bravely Default game with a quicker combat system. The only thing that I think could make its score suffer is if it turns out to be short.
