Forums - Gaming Discussion - The Vita has all of the features you wish the Nintendo Switch had.

First, the Switch is the fastest selling console? Even if you accept a handheld as a console, where does this data comes from? Globally in the US?
Second, the Vita is not backwards compatible, try putting a PSP game on it and play it, it doesn't have a place to put it in.
Third, Zelda and the PS4 made the difference, while Sony provided great support for the Vita in the beginning as well, the fact Nintendo moved full handheld so they are developing their top games for the Switch, Sony only had wathered down versions of what could be achieved on their main platforms, specially when they announced the PS4, Vita was a plus platform for Sony, Zelda proved Switch is Nintendo main platform now.
I still don't know how the pricing didn't matter for the Switch as it did as it should for the Vita, but good for Nintendo it didn't, maybe because in 2017 smartphones are so damn expensive that buying a mobile platform for 300 doesn't shock people that much, as it did when the PSV and the 3DS came.

I literally put "home console" instead of "console" in the OP to avoid this very thing. And I meant in the USA . I mean, I read the thread! I guess I still blew it. Oh well. Life goes on.

And Vita is totally backwards compatible with digital titles. My entire PSP Library (aside from Crisis Core and Metal Gear Portable Ops) is on my Vita. Probably 50 games instantly in my library. But if you don't consider that backwards comp, that's cool. Whatever you call it, I'd love if the Switch had it. When I bought my WiiU, I could download my Wii digital purchases in "Wii Mode". I'd love if my purchase of Super Mario Bros would transfer to the Switch whenever they put it on that console. I've already bought it multiple times.

Lastly, I know the Vita's weakness and the Switch's strength (one of them at least) is games. That's why I did the whole "features vs games" thing in the OP. Features don't really matter when all you want to do is play your favorite games. I know this! Features are nice, though...

*Edit* as far as pricing, I think the Switch is a good deal. If it didn't have a screen and it was home console only, I wouldn't pay more than $200 for what we get. And that's being generous! Being a home/portable device, I'm happy with $300.

What do i need wallpapers and themes, a camera, folders, web browser, netflix and other streaming services for in a gaming system?

The feature that makes me most perplexed that you claim as a ”most wanted” is a camera. Yay another device with a crappy camera.

I don't need that camera either, but with a camera Nintendo would have the option to release Pokémon Go for the Switch or include Pokémon-Go-features into their next Pokémon-Switch-game.

But non of the ”AR” functionality in PoGo does anything for gameplay. Atleast everyone I’ve seen had it turned off after the first few days. The poGo features that actually would matter for the game, that the Switch lacks, is a GPS.

Idd.. Switch has some excellent hardware, held back by some backwards software limitations. Fear not though, hackers are already working on a hacked firmware that should add a lot more features to the console.

Hopefully the homebrew scene can port over Netflix/Amazon and unlock a full web browser to the thing. As for backwards compatibility, adding legacy support *ahem* (emulators) should be a piece of cake.

Pretty much. The psp only sold as well as it did because it was a great PMP that doubled as a console. As seen by the horrible attatch rates... and when proper cheap smartphones (and everyone started using them)came along around 2010, that market died a flaming death, which was wht the vita was so slow.

Remember the ps1's 299 obliterating the saturn, and how SoA president said that 299 was the upper limit? Well for handhelds that was 199. The vita AND 3ds fell to this and only the quick drop to 170 really saved the 3ds.

The switch, as a hybrid, can hit 299 tho.

I don't need that camera either, but with a camera Nintendo would have the option to release Pokémon Go for the Switch or include Pokémon-Go-features into their next Pokémon-Switch-game.

Oh wow. It also needs your own 3G to go around, and a stronger battery because it drains sooo much of your smartphone

Where do I begin?

  • GPS doesn't need 3G or a data plan: https://www.quora.com/Can-tablets-use-GPS-without-3G-capabilities
  • more and more areas in the world get free Wi-Fi
  • of course Nintendo could optimize the battery drain of Pokémon Go much better on their own device than on an generic Android/iOS device
  • the beauty of a dedicated handheld: its primary function is gaming and you don't have to worry that much about losing connectivity (telephone, eMail, WhatsApp...) when you play too much

Actually the PSP had more features than the Switch has at the moment... just putting it out there.

Switch already has a better library of games than the PSP during its entire lifetime after only 10 months on the market... just putting that out there...

LOL. The DS/PSP libraries are so far ahead of all of the following handheld libraries. 3DS/Vita/Switch aren't close to either of them.

The PSP has a ridiculously low attach rate for a reason.

And the Switch might not sell as much hardware as the DS, but I'm VERY confident it will end up selling more games than it. :)

Switch is the first handheld that can provide home console experiences on the go (PSP tried, but it simply wasn't powerful enough and it didn't have enough buttons / second analogue stick) and it didn't rely heavily on gimmicks like the DS (the Zelda games on the DS are simply terrible).
