I think the writing and VO for him hurt him the most as a character.

He's vastly overrated and one of the worst characters in gaming. Not to mention he's an idiot.Yeah tricked like the idiot he is to kill his family. He's so broken up about it he fucks some whores. Asura has the same concept but executed much better in the story. I'm sorry but the GoW games I played, GoW 2, Chains of Olympus and Ascension are some of the shittiest action games I've ever played. There is no way Kratos is underrated. Is Mario underrated or Master Chief? Only one of the most popular around. Bullshit. He's an asshole all the way through. It's no wonder Kratos sucks as a character. David Jaffe directed GoW. Jaffe thinks what is cool at 13 years old is edgy and mature. (just look at the garbage that is Drawn to Death.)

I've always had my eye on Asura but have never gotten around to it. I was reading up on it and the developers had something interesting to say about how they developed the story:

"...When we came up with this backwards approach to the development process, first we thought of our focus on wrath, then focused on the story, so we built the story first. Who wrote the story? CyberConnect 2 did, as a group. It was a group effort throughout the dev team, but when we had the story, we passed that on to an actual script writer."

I assume this focus was what made for better execution.

its a basic revenge story that is like watching an anime that is over the top. its hardly better execution.

Kratos motivation is hate. Hate for himself, hate for the gods and contempt for everyone else. It's the only thing that keeps him going through most of the games. I don't think that makes him one dimensional or underwritten. It's just the only thing he has left, the only thing that keeps him want to live. That makes him a rather unique character.

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

He lost his family because of the Gods so it makes sense for him to be hateful towards the Gods. He lead the Spartan army so it makes sense that he didn't bat an eye when taking out anyone standing in his way. People take his story way out of context especially the ones who have only seen some youtube videos of the GOW games. His story makes sense in his context.

1) You are totally right. Im not trying to say that they were clear and fulfilled their end from the very beginning this deal was struck. Just that Athenas words from the beginning of GoW1 are exactly what she gives Kratos at the end.

2) Totally, erasing his memories was just a selfish at, and the easy way out.

3) I think the suicide scene is definitely a good one. Now just the breaking point for him as you say. Its about man vs god. determinism vs fatalism.

4) Yeah I dont want to suppose its that deep. But I think it ties in nicely into not having to rely on a greater power. And kratos embodies that for humanity (thematically )

Sorry for the late reply but thanks for the discussion. Always good to chat about a series like GoW where ppl just assume it has nothing going for it in terms of narrative themes or characterisation.

I think a lot of people assume the series is shallow because they never played the games or never paid attention to the plot. Even the general brutality is reasonable in the context of the Greek mythology, the Gods themselves were completely barbaric.

I really see it as a man vs Gods situation. And the GOW4 trailers seem to indicate that even Gods from other mythologies can't give the guy a break.

I'm sure that's true because most people disliking the series make one dimensional comments about it with no context.

Hmm... he is a shallow B movie character in a B movie creek mythology setting and B movie plot. However the gameplay is good and most of the god of war games are pretty good. Resident evil has a similar situation. Doesn´t stop some of the games from being great.

One could infer that you are even more unidimensional and with anger issues than even Kratos himself.

Maybe he is so angry with sony because they totally destroyed the poor dreamcast with the ps2?

perma banned... well deserved.

Great post mate, been reading a bunch of these comments and its good to see people actually paid attention to the story. People just kinda didn't take it for more than a brutal hack and slash adventure but there was a story and a character there. I can see how people just see an angry man but as you can see from the posts above there is far more to him and the story.

I don't understand why some people dislike Kratos. I like him because he's just constantly pissed off because reasons. Hearing him shout at things and grimacing at them before tearing shit up gets me pumped...

I like him most times anyways when he's not being a total asshole.
